DirecTV — A Plain-English Guide for Portage County
Last verified: August 2026
Satellite vs. Stream, the 2-year contract trap, the hidden RSN fee, the Loyalty Department trick, and the cord-cutting math. Written by a guy who fixes Genie boxes and talks customers through "should we switch?" at Portage County kitchen tables every week.
About DirecTV in 2026
DirecTV in 2026 is a different company than it was five years ago. AT&T sold its stake in stages between 2021 and 2025, and the satellite-and-streaming business is now owned by a private-equity firm called TPG Capital. New billing portal, separate customer service number, no more shared AT&T login. For Portage County customers that means: same dish on your roof, same channels, but you call a different 800 number when you have a question.
DirecTV today sells two products under the same brand: the classic DirecTV Satellite with a dish on your roof, and the newer DirecTV Stream, which is internet-delivered through a small box (or just an app). Same channel packages, same names, very different plumbing.
When to skip the DIY and just call: Year-2 price jump · Bill audit · Dish re-aim · Cord-cut analysis · Loyalty department call.
DirecTV in Portage County — the real story
Drive any rural road south of Atwater and you'll see DirecTV dishes on roughly one in every three rooftops. That's not nostalgia — it's geography. Cable internet and cable TV have been spotty or non-existent in stretches of Edinburg, Deerfield, Palmyra, and Suffield Township for years, and satellite was the only reliable option. A lot of those installs from 2005–2015 are still running today.
- Where it shines locally: Rural Edinburg, Deerfield, Palmyra, Suffield Township — anywhere cable internet stops at the edge of a neighbor's driveway. Off-grid homes. Big farms with clear southern sky.
- Where it struggles: Lake Erie snow squalls knock the signal out for 10–30 minutes. Summer thunderstorms do the same for 5–10 minutes. Trees that were saplings in 2010 are now blocking the dish for some customers — symptom is "works great in winter, flaky in summer."
- Bill's rule: If you've got reliable cable internet and you're not under contract anymore, run the DirecTV Stream math — it's often the better deal in 2026.

Plans (mid-2026)
Same package names on both satellite and Stream. Headline prices below are for satellite. Stream is about $20 higher per tier but already includes the HD/DVR fee that satellite charges extra for — so all-in, the two are within a few dollars of each other.
| Package | Satellite | Stream (no contract) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entertainment | $69.99/mo | $86.99/mo | ~160 channels, no RSNs |
| Choice | $86.99/mo | $108.99/mo | Adds RSNs, MLB Network |
| Ultimate | $109.99/mo | $128.99/mo | Adds movie + lifestyle channels |
| Premier | $154.99/mo | $173.99/mo | Adds HBO/Max, Showtime, Starz |
Common Questions
1 My bill just jumped $50. What happened?
You hit month 13 of your 2-year satellite contract. The first 12 months are a promotional rate; month 13 onward is the regular rate, which is typically $40–$60 higher per month. This is not a billing error — it's the standard DirecTV contract structure.
The fix: Call 1-800-531-5000, get past the menu (say "cancel service" or press 0 a few times), and ask to be transferred to the Loyalty Department. Tell them your bill is too expensive and you're considering switching to YouTube TV. Then be quiet. They almost always have a discount — $20 off for 12 months, free Showtime for 6 months, or a credit on the next bill. Average savings I see: $20–$40/month.
2 What's the Regional Sports Network fee on my bill?
The RSN fee is up to $13.99/month, charged on the Choice package and higher. It pays for FanDuel Sports Network Ohio (formerly Bally Sports) — the regional network that carries the Cleveland Cavaliers. It's charged EVERY month regardless of whether you watch a single sports game.
If you don't watch local sports, the only way to drop the RSN fee is to downgrade to the Entertainment package, which doesn't include RSNs at all. That switch saves about $30/month for non-sports households (smaller package + no RSN fee).
3 The picture goes out every time it storms. Can that be fixed?
It's called rain fade (or snow fade in winter), and it's the physics of satellite TV — a heavy storm cell between your dish and the satellite weakens the signal until it can't be decoded. Lake Erie squalls are the worst offenders in Portage County. There's no setting to turn off because it's not a settings issue.
- Wait it out. Most rain fade clears in 5–30 minutes once the cell moves through.
- Brush snow off the dish if you can safely reach it. Wet snow accumulation on the dish itself is fixable; airborne snow is not.
- Check the dish for tree growth. If signal is great in winter but flaky in summer, you probably have a leafed-out tree branch in the way.
- If outages last hours, not minutes, the dish needs re-aiming. Press {Menu} → Settings → Info & Test → More System Info on the Genie to check signal strength. Below 70 means trouble.
If rain fade is a daily frustration, that's actually one of the better reasons to look at DirecTV Stream — no dish, no weather problem (assuming reliable internet).
4 Should I switch to DirecTV Stream?
Maybe. The honest answer depends on three things:
- Is your home internet reliable? You need at least 25 Mbps and no daily outages. Test at fast.com.
- Are you still under a 2-year satellite contract? If yes, switching mid-contract triggers a $20-per-remaining-month early termination fee. Sometimes worth waiting it out.
- Do you want unlimited cloud DVR? Stream includes it free. Satellite caps you at the Genie's hard drive.
For most customers with solid internet and out of contract, Stream wins. No 2-year commitment, no dish on the roof, no weather drops, includes cloud DVR. The pushback I hear most often is "but I've had the dish for 20 years and it works fine" — which is also a totally fair answer.
5 NFL Sunday Ticket — does DirecTV still have it?
For residential customers — no. NFL Sunday Ticket moved to YouTube TV in 2023 and is no longer available on DirecTV satellite or Stream. The only exception: commercial Sunday Ticket is still on DirecTV for bars, restaurants, and other businesses.
If Sunday Ticket was the main reason you've stuck with DirecTV, that's the biggest cord-cutting trigger I see in my customer base. YouTube TV is $82.99/month plus the Sunday Ticket add-on at $378/season ($31.50/month spread out). Most former DirecTV-Sunday-Ticket customers I've moved to YouTube TV have ended up saving $30–$50/month overall.
6 I'm cancelling. What do I do with the boxes?
Return everything within 21 days or DirecTV bills you $300 per unreturned receiver. They'll mail you prepaid UPS return boxes after you cancel.
- Unplug every Genie, Mini Genie, and Gemini in the house. Wrap the power cord around each.
- Pack everything in the prepaid UPS boxes. Each box has a label already printed.
- Drop off at any UPS Store (Ravenna, Kent, Aurora locations) and get a tracking receipt.
- Keep that receipt for at least 60 days in case DirecTV claims they didn't receive a box.
The dish itself stays on the roof — it's yours after install. You can pay me to take it down or just leave it; it doesn't hurt anything.
7 The voice remote on my Gemini doesn't recognize what I say.
Two usual causes:
- Hold the microphone button DOWN for the entire sentence — don't just tap and release. The remote only listens while the button is held.
- The remote needs to be paired/re-paired with the Gemini. Settings → Remote & Accessibility → Pair Remote, then hold the back and home buttons together until the LED flashes.
Try saying simple commands first: "Show me ESPN," "Find Blue Bloods," "Open Netflix." If those work, the remote is fine — you're just on a phrasing curve.
The Traps to Watch For
- The 2-year contract jump — months 1–12 are promo; months 13–24 are full price ($40–$60 higher). Set a calendar reminder for month 11.
- Equipment lease, not ownership — every box must be returned within 21 days of cancellation or DirecTV bills $300 per box.
- "Free 4 receivers for life" means no upfront fee — you still pay monthly lease fees per box ($7–$10/mo each).
- Regional Sports Network fee — up to $13.99/month every month on Choice and higher, even if you never watch sports.
- 3-month free premium channel trials auto-bill at $13.99–$22/month each on day 91. Set a reminder to cancel by day 89.
- The 800-number reps push add-ons — learn the phrase "no thank you, just want to fix my bill."
- Cruise-ship satellite signal — your dish on the roof obviously doesn't work on a ship. If you want TV on a cruise, the ship has its own (very expensive) satellite system.
Want a Real Person to Sort Out Your DirecTV Bill?
DirecTV bills are one of those things where the same package can cost two neighbors wildly different amounts depending on what got added quietly. Text me a photo of your bill summary and I'll tell you in 10 minutes whether you're paying for stuff you don't watch. For a full Loyalty Department call, a Stream switch, or a cord-cut analysis, that's the $99 flat visit — 30-day follow-up included. No surprises.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.
Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
