Dish Network — A Plain-English Guide

1 Which Dish plan should I actually pick?

Four English-language tiers, priced mid-2026:

• America's Top 120 — $84.99/mo, 190+ channels. Right pick for a light watcher who wants news, weather, HGTV, Hallmark.
• America's Top 120 Plus — $99.99/mo. Adds the regional sports network (FanDuel Sports Network Ohio, formerly Bally Sports) — Cavs games.
• America's Top 200 — $114.99/mo, 240+ channels. Adds Disney, Nick, more movies — best if grandkids visit.
• America's Top 250 — $129.99/mo, 290+ channels with most premium movie channels.

And the catch: those are base prices. By the time you add the DVR fee ($15/mo), local channels, regional fees, and taxes, you're looking at $115–$170 on the actual bill. Always run the real number, not the advertised one.

2 What's AutoHop and why does it matter?

AutoHop is a button on the Dish remote that, when you watch a recorded prime-time show from ABC, CBS, NBC, or Fox, skips every commercial break automatically. Press play, the show plays straight through. You'll see a brief blue flash where the ads used to be.

It only works on:

1. Recorded prime-time shows (not live TV).
2. The four big broadcast networks (not cable channels like HGTV or Fox News).
3. The next day after recording (the AutoHop processing happens overnight).

If you record Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune every weeknight, AutoHop saves you about 22 minutes of commercials per night. The networks sued Dish over this back in 2012–2014 and lost. It's still here.

3 My bill is about to jump $30/month. Now what?

The 2-year price lock is expiring. That's when most Dish customers either renegotiate or quit. The renegotiation playbook:

1. Call 1-800-333-3474. Press the option for "cancel service" or "thinking of leaving." That routes you to Customer Retention faster than other menus.
2. Say calmly: "My 2-year promo is ending and my bill is going to jump. I'm thinking about switching to DirecTV (or YouTube TV, or Sling). What can you do to keep me as a customer?"
3. Be quiet. Let them make the first offer. Reject it. Ask "Is there anything else?"
4. The second or third offer is usually $15–$25/month off, plus 6 months of free premium channels.

About 90% of customers who do this knock $180–$300 a year off their bill.

4 Signal goes out when it snows or storms. What can I do?

Rain fade and snow fade are a real part of satellite TV — usually 5 to 15 minutes during a heavy lake-effect band or thunderstorm. It comes back on its own. Two practical fixes:

1. Brush snow off the dish with a soft broom on a long handle. Takes 30 seconds. Do NOT get on the roof — every winter I get a call from a senior who tried and ended up on the ground.
2. Keep an over-the-air antenna in the attic or on the chimney. About $100 installed. When the dish drops out, flip the TV input to ANTENNA and you still get the Cleveland locals — WEWS, WKYC, WJW, WOIO — for free. Saves a lot of Sundays during Browns season.

If the dish is mounted high or has come loose in a wind event, don't climb — call me or call Dish. Dish service calls are usually free under their standard plan.

5 Should I switch to Sling TV instead? Dish owns it, right?

Yes, Sling is Dish's streaming service — same Colorado parent company, completely different product. Runs over your internet to a Roku or Fire TV. The math:

• Sling Orange or Blue — $45.99 and $50.99/month, about 30–40 channels each.
• Sling Orange + Blue — $65.99/month, about 50 channels.
• No contract — pause and restart anytime (great for snowbirds).

Sling makes sense if: you only watch 10–20 channels, you have decent internet (25 Mbps+), and you're okay using a streaming stick. The catch is the locals — ABC and CBS aren't on Sling at all, NBC and Fox only in select markets. You'd need a $30 over-the-air antenna for the locals.

If you're paying $130/month for Dish and watching 12 channels, Sling at $46–$66 plus an antenna is worth a serious look. About 60% of the bill, more control over what you pay for.

6 I'm cancelling — what do I do with the Hopper?

This is where most ex-Dish customers get hit with surprise charges. The Hopper, Joeys, and remotes are leased, not owned. You have 30 days from cancellation to return them or get charged:

• Hopper 3 or Hopper Plus: $300
• Each Joey: $100
• Voice remote: $30

For a typical 1-Hopper, 2-Joey household, that's $530+ if you forget. The right way:

1. Call Dish to cancel. They email you a UPS return shipping label within 48 hours.
2. Box up the Hopper, Joeys, remotes, and power cords. Any sturdy box works.
3. Drop at the UPS Store on Route 14 in Ravenna (no charge). Get a receipt with the tracking number.
4. Keep that receipt for 6 months. I've had two customers in the last year fight bogus "equipment never arrived" charges, and the UPS tracking settled it instantly.
