About AT&T in 2026
AT&T today is a more focused company than the one that owned HBO and CNN five years ago. After spinning off WarnerMedia in 2022, they're back to running phones, fiber internet, and business services. For wireless customers in Portage County, that means: solid orange-and-blue store presence, four Unlimited plans, and a few sales practices you should know about going in.

Coverage in Portage County — the real story
AT&T's official map shows solid 5G across the whole county. The reality I see on customer visits is more nuanced. AT&T was built on the old Cingular network, which historically favored highway corridors and town centers — and that bias still shows up.
- Strong: Route 14 from Atwater through Ravenna, Route 43 through Kent, I-76 and the Turnpike, downtown Ravenna, Streetsboro and Aurora retail strips.
- Weak: farm roads south of Atwater toward Berlin Center, the western edge of Suffield Township, inside concrete-block buildings, and metal-roofed pole barns.
- Bill's rule: always take the 14-day money-back trial seriously. Test the phone at home, your kids' house, church, the grocery store. If it stutters anywhere important, return it.
The Four Unlimited Plans (2026)
All four include unlimited talk, text, and 5G data. Differences are hotspot data, video quality, and international perks. Prices below are per-line with autopay from a bank account + paperless billing — turn either off and AT&T adds $10/line.

Common Questions
1 Is the AT&T Senior Nation Plan a good deal?
Almost never. The $30/month "Senior Nation" plan is a flip-phone-era voice-only plan — 200 minutes, no data included, pay-per-text. If you have a smartphone, you'll rack up overage and per-text charges that often push the bill to $50–60 anyway. For Portage County seniors with a smartphone, the single-line Value 2.0 at $50 (autopay + paperless) is predictable and usually cheaper after surprises.
Also: AT&T's better senior plan, Unlimited 55+, is only available in Florida and a few markets. Not Ohio. If a salesperson offers it here, ask them to show it on AT&T's website before signing.
2 Calls drop in my back bedroom. Help.
Turn on Wi-Fi Calling. It's free, it's included on every plan, and it fixes most "weak signal at home" complaints.
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Wi-Fi Calling → On.
- Android: Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile network → Advanced → Wi-Fi Calling.
- Register your home address when prompted (required for 911 routing).
Your phone will now make and receive calls over the home Wi-Fi when the cell signal is weak. It uses your normal number.
3 What's the "Next Up" charge on my bill?
Next Up is a $7/month per line add-on AT&T sells with new phones — it lets you upgrade after paying off 51% of the phone instead of waiting the full 36 months. Sounds reasonable. The math: $7 × 36 months = $252, whether you actually upgrade or not. Most seniors keep phones 4–6 years; I've never seen Next Up pay off for a senior customer.
To remove it: call 611 from your AT&T phone and say "please remove Next Up from all my lines." No penalty. Some authorized retailers add it without making the cost clear — check your bill after any new-phone purchase.
4 I want to switch from Verizon (or T-Mobile). What do I need?
- Call your current carrier and ask for your account number and transfer PIN. AT&T needs both to port your number.
- Back up contacts, photos, and any authenticator apps (Google Authenticator, Authy) — being locked out of your bank because the codes are on a wiped phone is a bad day.
- At the AT&T store (or with me at your kitchen table), the port takes 10–30 minutes. Your old phone goes dark briefly. Always works.
- Use the 14-day money-back trial seriously — test the phone at every place you regularly go. If it stutters anywhere important, return the equipment within 14 days.
5 I'm going on a cruise / overseas. What about the phone?
Mexico & Canada: free on all four Unlimited plans. Use the phone normally.
Europe, UK, Asia (210+ countries): add International Day Pass in the myAT&T app. $12/day per line, only charged on days you actually use the phone. Unlimited talk, text, and data on your normal number.
CRUISE SHIPS ARE NOT COUNTRIES. Day Pass does NOT cover cellular on a cruise ship — the ship has its own satellite tower that bills $3–$5 per minute and per-megabyte data. A 10-minute call home is $40. Put the phone on airplane mode before boarding and use the ship's Wi-Fi (which you've pre-paid for) for WhatsApp/FaceTime/text. This is the single most expensive AT&T mistake I see in my customer base.
6 Hidden discounts — am I missing one?
Probably. The big one is the AT&T Signature Discount — up to 25% off your monthly wireless if you work for (or are retired from) an eligible employer. Common in Northeast Ohio: Cleveland Clinic, Summa, Akron General, UH, Kent State, FirstEnergy, Akron Public Schools, the State of Ohio, and any branch of the military or first responders.
Check at att.com/signaturediscount — enter your work email (.org, .gov, etc.), provide proof (pay stub, retiree ID, VA card), and the discount applies in 1–2 billing cycles. I had a retired Cleveland Clinic nurse on AT&T 12 years who didn't know about this — submitting her old badge photo dropped her bill $40/month.
Also worth knowing: when you call 611, ask politely to be transferred to the Loyalty Department. That team has the authority to give discounts the regular agents can't.
7 Why am I getting 12 spam calls a day?
Install AT&T Active Armor — it's free and included on every wireless plan. Most customers don't know they have it.
- App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android) → search AT&T Active Armor.
- Install. Sign in with your AT&T account.
- Allow the call-directory and notification permissions.
Auto-blocks known fraud calls, labels suspected spam, blocks spam texts AT&T has flagged, and lets you add your own block list. One customer went from 12 spam calls a day to 1 or 2. The grandkids and the doctor still ring through. The scammers do not.
The Traps to Watch For
- Autopay must be from a bank account for the discount — the credit-card discount went away in 2022.
- Authorized retailers (Cellular Sales, Prime, Arch) are NOT corporate AT&T stores. They push add-ons hard. Corporate stores are calmer — they're the bigger mall locations (Belden Village, Chapel Hill, Crocker Park).
- Surprise accessories on the receipt: $40 case + $50 screen protector + $25 charger added to your trade-in without asking. Always look at the line items before signing.
- EIP balance is due immediately if you cancel early. "Free phone with trade-in" is actually 36 months of bill credits — leave at month 12, owe the remaining balance.
- U-verse TV bundles are mostly gone. Don't agree to a bundle pitch without seeing the math in writing.
- Cruise-ship cellular — see Question 5 above. Airplane mode + ship Wi-Fi.
