Verizon is the most reliable carrier in eastern Portage County — and the most expensive. This guide cuts through the marketing so you can pick the right plan, avoid the bill creep, and know exactly what to ask for at the store. Verizon is the largest US carrier and has the longest reputation for reliable coverage — particularly out in rural areas like eastern Portage County. It's also the most expensive of the big three, and the experience of dealing with their stores and bills can feel like a part-time job. The good news: their 30-day money-back guarantee is the longest in the industry, so you can test it in your house before committing.
For folks who live in Atwater, Randolph, Deerfield, Palmyra, or anywhere east of Ravenna — in old farmhouses or brick houses where signal struggles — Verizon's extra $20/month is usually worth it. For folks in Streetsboro, Aurora, central Kent, or central Ravenna, you can almost certainly get the same real-world experience for less money on T-Mobile or AT&T.
Plans and Pricing (mid-2026)
1 Unlimited Welcome — $65/mo (1 line, autopay)
The entry tier. Unlimited talk, text, and data on Verizon's 5G Nationwide network. 5 GB hotspot. This is the plan most Portage County seniors should pick — it covers normal phone use just fine.
With 4 lines on the account, it drops to ~$30/line. Couples on Welcome pay about $110/month total.
2 Unlimited Plus — $80/mo
Adds 5G Ultra Wideband (only useful if you live in central Kent, Ravenna, Streetsboro, or Aurora — check the coverage map), 50 GB hotspot, and faster speeds on busy networks. Worth the extra $15 if you tether a laptop regularly or stream a lot on cellular.
3 Unlimited Ultimate — $90/mo
Adds 60 GB hotspot, 30 GB of premium data, and unlimited talk/text in 210 countries (no per-day Travel Pass fee). Worth it for snowbirds and frequent cruisers — usually not for anyone else.
Discounts Worth Asking For
4 AARP — $10/line/month off Plus or Ultimate
Doesn't apply to Welcome (which is annoying). If you're an AARP member and you're on Plus, ask Verizon to add it — they don't always offer it.
5 Military / first-responder — up to $25/line/month
Veterans, active military, police, fire, EMTs, and nurses qualify. Verify through ID.me — takes ten minutes online and then sticks on the account forever.
6 Loyalty discount (the secret one)
Customers with 10+ years on Verizon can usually get $5-$15/month per line just by calling 611, asking for the Loyalty Department, and saying "my bill has crept up — can you do anything to bring it down?" Not advertised. Not offered. You have to ask.
The Traps to Watch For
7 "Free phone" = 36-month commitment
That "free iPhone" is actually $1,000 spread over 36 monthly bill credits. Cancel the line before month 36 and you owe the balance. Switch plan tiers (some promos) and the credits stop. Always ask explicitly: "Does this offer lock me into a specific plan tier? What happens to the credits if I cancel?"
8 Authorized retailers add their own fees
Not every store with a Verizon sign is owned by Verizon. Authorized retailers (Victra, Cellular Sales, Russell Cellular) are independent franchises that often add a "store setup" fee, mandatory accessory bundles, and won't honor returns from other locations. Look for "Authorized Retailer" in small print near the door. For any major transaction, drive to a corporate Verizon store — the closest are in Cuyahoga Falls, Niles, and south Akron.
9 myPlan perks balloon the bill fast
Each perk is $10/month. Three perks turns a $65 plan into $95. Five perks turns it into $115. Audit yours once a year: My Verizon app → Account → My Plan → Perks → Remove the ones you don't use.
The perks that ARE good value: Disney Bundle ($10/mo for what's normally $20+), Apple Music Family ($10/mo for what's normally $17). The ones to drop first: 3TB iCloud+ (overpriced — Apple sells it directly for less), Walmart+ (only useful if you do grocery delivery), and the smartwatch line if your Watch is Wi-Fi only.
Before You Switch

- Check the coverage map at
verizon.com/coverage-mapfor your home, work, and most-driven routes. - Back up contacts, photos, texts, WhatsApp chats, and two-factor codes BEFORE switching phones.
- Don't cancel the old carrier first. Verizon needs the old account active to port your number. They'll close it automatically.
- Bring the final bill from your old carrier to claim Verizon's "Save & Switch" credit — up to $1,000 toward your old early-termination fee.
