The Short Version

T-Mobile in 2026 is a real choice. After the Sprint merger (2020) the network grew up — it's no longer the cheap-and-spotty option from a decade ago. Coverage across most of Portage County is solid, the 55+ senior pricing saves a couple hundred dollars a year for most senior couples, and the international roaming is something Verizon and AT&T just don't match. The downsides are honest: spotty signal in deep rural pockets (Deerfield, Palmyra, Edinburg), a "free phone" deal that locks you in for 24 months, and a sales-y in-store experience.

If you want my one-line take: test the network at your house first with the free 3-month Network Pass (eSIM), then switch if it works. Half the customers I move come back from Verizon saving $40–$80/month with no daily-life difference.

Common Questions

1 Will T-Mobile work at my house in Portage County?

Streetsboro, Aurora, Kent, Ravenna downtown, and the Route 14/43/59 corridors: yes — strong 5G almost everywhere.

Atwater, Deerfield, Palmyra, Edinburg, Charlestown, and the back roads: spotty. Workable indoors with Wi-Fi Calling turned on. Bare cellular alone can be one bar or none in older brick homes.

Don't trust the coverage map. The free fix: install the T-Mobile Network Pass on your iPhone — it adds a T-Mobile eSIM that runs alongside your current carrier for 3 months free. You test the real-world signal at your home, your kid's house, the grocery store, anywhere — without dropping your current service. If T-Mobile is great, port your number. If it's bad, do nothing and the trial expires.

2 What's the 55+ plan and is it really cheaper?

Yes — significantly. The current senior plan is Experience More With 55+ Savings:

  • 1 line: $70/month with AutoPay (vs $85 regular) — save about $15/mo
  • 2 lines: $100/month with AutoPay ($50 per line) — a strong deal for a senior couple

Includes full 5G, free Apple TV+, free Netflix with ads, 50 GB of high-speed hotspot, free international data in 215+ countries.

The catch: the primary account holder must be 55+, and the plan is capped at 2 lines. Perfect for a senior couple. Doesn't work as well if you want to add adult kids.

3 They're offering me a "free iPhone" to switch — should I take it?

Read the fine print first. The "free phone" works like this:

  1. You finance the full $830 phone over 24 months (~$34.50/month added to your bill).
  2. T-Mobile credits you back $34.50/month — but only as long as you stay on the qualifying plan AND on T-Mobile for 24 months.
  3. Leave early? Remaining balance comes due immediately.
  4. Downgrade your plan? Bill credits stop. You quietly pay $20+/month for the phone.

If you're sure you'll stay 24+ months, the deal is genuinely free. If you might experiment with Mint or Consumer Cellular next year, skip it. Bring your own phone or pay cash, and walk away free anytime.

Got a "free phone" deal you're already on? Don't change plans without checking what it does to your bill credits. Text me before you click anything. (330) 200-8042.

4 My signal is weak at home — what do I do?

Turn on Wi-Fi Calling. It's free, built in, and routes your calls and texts through your home Wi-Fi instead of the cell tower. Sound quality is often better than cellular.

  1. iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Wi-Fi Calling → ON. Enter your home address (used for 911).
  2. Android (Samsung/Pixel): Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi Calling → ON.

When it's active, the top of your phone says "T-Mobile Wi-Fi" instead of "T-Mobile." Anyone you call sounds the same; they don't know the difference.

If your home Wi-Fi is also weak in the same room, that's a separate fix — a mesh system (Eero or Google Nest WiFi) covers most Portage County houses for $200–$400 installed.

5 How do I get help when something goes wrong?

Four options, in the order I'd actually use them:

  1. T-Mobile app first. Most billing and plan questions live here.
  2. T-Force — message @TMobileHelp on X (Twitter) or T-Mobile on Facebook. Fast (10–30 min), US-based, can fix billing on the spot. Better than 611 for anything complicated.
  3. Dial 611 from your T-Mobile phone. Wait 5–15 minutes during business hours.
  4. Walk into the Streetsboro store. Good for SIM swaps and broken-phone help. Bad for billing (they call corporate same as you) and they'll try to upsell every time.

Or text me first — I've untangled enough T-Mobile messes that I can usually save you the call entirely. (330) 200-8042.

6 I'm going on a cruise — does the international roaming work?

On land in 215+ countries: yes. Get off the plane, turn your phone off airplane mode, and it just works. Texts and data are free; calls are $0.25/min. You don't have to set anything up.

On the ship at sea: NO. Cruise ships have an onboard satellite system called Cellular at Sea, which is not T-Mobile. A single voice call can be $5–$10/minute; data can hit $15/MB. I've heard from a Portage County customer who came home to a $400 phone bill after streaming Facebook in their cabin.

Rule: turn on Airplane Mode the second you board. Use the ship's Wi-Fi package if you bought one. Cellular back on only in port.

Want Me to Help You Switch (or Sort Out the Bill)?

T-Mobile is the easiest carrier switch I do — usually under an hour with everything ported, your contacts moved, the old carrier properly cancelled, and Wi-Fi Calling + Scam Shield turned on. $99 flat for the visit. The 22-page printable guide above covers it all in plain English — keep it in the kitchen drawer.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
