A simple order for chasing slow internet.

Spectrum is the default internet in Portage County. Mostly fine. But the bill creeps, the modem-rental charges appear out of nowhere, and the Wi-Fi router is the weak link. Here's how to keep more of your money — from a local tech who reviews these bills every week.

What You're Actually Paying For

Spectrum sells internet service — a coax cable into your house carrying the signal, and an all-in-one modem-router box that turns it into Wi-Fi. The modem itself is included (free) on every plan. The Wi-Fi router service (Spectrum "Advanced WiFi") is $10/month extra — and that's the fee most people pay without realizing they could skip it.

Spectrum is the dominant ISP across Portage County. Coverage is wide — Atwater, Ravenna, Kent, Streetsboro, Aurora, Brimfield, Suffield, Rootstown, Mantua, Hiram, Garrettsville. The few addresses I find without it are deep-rural back roads. Service is generally reliable; the things that go wrong are predictable.

Common Questions

1 My bill just jumped $25. What happened?

Your 12-month promo expired. This is by far the most common Spectrum complaint. The fix is one phone call to the Retention Department:

  1. Call (855) 707-7328. When the menu asks, say "cancel service" — this routes you to Retention, the people who can actually lower bills.
  2. Opening line: "My bill just went up $25 and I'm thinking about switching. AT&T Fiber / T-Mobile Home Internet has been calling. Can you help bring my bill back down?"
  3. Be patient. They'll usually come back with a new 12-month promo at the original price, or a one-time credit.
  4. If the first offer is weak, politely ask: "Is there a manager or another option?"

I did this for a Ravenna client in May — 7 minutes on the phone, her bill went from $84 back to $50, locked for another 12 months. $408 saved on one call.

Don't want to make the call yourself? I'll do this as part of any $99 flat per-visit — you keep 100% of the savings. (330) 200-8042.

2 Internet is slow every night around dinner.

This is evening node congestion — between roughly 6 and 10 PM, your whole neighborhood is streaming Netflix on every TV, and Spectrum's shared cable pipe gets crowded. Speed drops 30-50%. Upgrading your plan doesn't really help; you'll still get a bigger slice of a smaller pie.

What actually works:

  1. Use Ethernet for the smart TV. Wired connection avoids Wi-Fi contention.
  2. Set Netflix and YouTube to 1080p in the evening instead of 4K. Still looks great, uses 1/4 the bandwidth.
  3. Run big downloads or backups overnight, not at 7 PM.
  4. Reboot the modem monthly — see Question 4.

3 Why is there a $14.99 "modem lease" line on my bill?

Because someone made a mistake. Spectrum stopped charging for the internet modem in 2020 — it's included with every plan. But I still see this rogue charge on bills I review fairly often, usually for long-term customers who were charged years ago and never had it removed.

Call (855) 707-7328 and say: "I'd like the modem rental fee removed — it should be free on my plan." They'll remove it, and sometimes credit you back a month. Worth a 5-minute call.

Want me to audit your bill? Bill review is part of any service visit. Half the time I find something. (330) 200-8042.

4 Internet is slow or acting up. What do I do first?

The 60-second modem reboot solves half of all "slow internet" problems. Before you call anyone:

  1. Find the modem (the box with the coax cable — the thick black wire with the screw-on tip).
  2. Unplug the power. Count to 60 slowly. Don't rush.
  3. Plug it back in. Lights start blinking; wait 3-5 minutes for them to go solid.
  4. Test the internet.

If you have your own router (Eero / Orbi / Deco), reboot it after the modem — modem first, router second, so it gets a fresh handshake.

Bonus tip: If you have an Eero or similar mesh, the app has a "scheduled reboot" setting. Set it to 3 AM monthly and forget about it forever.

5 Wi-Fi works in one room but is awful in another.

Spectrum's all-in-one router has mediocre range. Works fine in a 1,200 sq-ft ranch. Struggles in two-story or L-shaped homes. Three options, easiest to best:

  1. Move the Spectrum box higher and more central. Wi-Fi goes down and out, not through floors.
  2. Add a Wi-Fi extender ($30-60). Easy but often cuts speed in half.
  3. Switch to a mesh system — Eero 6 ($199), TP-Link Deco ($229), or Netgear Orbi ($449). Several pucks placed around the house; way better coverage and faster.

If you go with your own mesh router, also call Spectrum and ask them to remove the $10/mo Wi-Fi charge and put your modem in bridge mode. Saves $120/year on top of the better Wi-Fi.

Not sure which router fits your house? I bring options on visits — Eero, TP-Link, Orbi — and install whichever fits. Standard $99 covers it. (330) 200-8042.

6 Internet is completely out. Is it me or Spectrum?

Before you sit on hold for 30 minutes, check for a known outage:

  1. My Spectrum app on your phone (works on cellular data even when home Wi-Fi is down). Red banner means area outage.
  2. spectrum.net/outages — enter your zip.
  3. Or text "OUT" to 727-87 from the phone on your account.

If multiple neighbors are out too, Spectrum already knows — calling won't speed it up. Most area outages clear within 2-4 hours.

If it's just you, check the modem lights:

  • All lights off — power issue. Check the outlet.
  • "Internet" or "Online" light is OFF — reboot first (Q4); call if it doesn't recover in 10 minutes.
  • All lights solid but no Wi-Fi — router issue, not modem. Reboot the router.
  • Random blinking, never settles — modem may be failing. Call for a free swap.
Can't tell what the lights are saying? Text me a photo at (330) 200-8042. I can usually tell in 5 minutes whether it's worth calling Spectrum.

7 Is Spectrum Internet Assist real? Can I qualify?

Yes — it's real, it's not charity, and it's the best-kept secret in Portage County. $24.99/mo flat for 50 Mbps, no 12-month promo trap, free modem included. Plenty of speed for one or two people doing normal internet.

You qualify if anyone in the household receives:

  • SNAP (food stamps)
  • SSI (covers most low-income seniors on disability)
  • National School Lunch Program (free or reduced lunch)

Apply at spectrum.com — search "Internet Assist". Upload a photo of your SNAP card or SSI award letter. Approval takes a few days.

If you or your spouse is on SSI or SNAP, you should be on this plan. I help eligible clients enroll for free — takes 20 minutes of paperwork, saves $50-60/month forever. (330) 200-8042.

8 Should I switch to AT&T Fiber or T-Mobile Home Internet?

AT&T Fiber is the better long-term choice if it's at your address. Symmetric speeds (same down and up), modem rental included, no surprise promo expiry. Available on some streets in Streetsboro, Kent, and Aurora. Check at att.com/internet.

T-Mobile Home Internet is $50/mo flat, modem included, works on 5G cellular. Real speeds 100-300 Mbps down. Fine for couples and light users; not great for heavy gaming or big families. Available almost everywhere T-Mobile has good cell coverage.

For deep-rural addresses where cable doesn't reach, Starlink ($120/mo + $349 dish) is often the only option.

For most Spectrum customers, though, the best move isn't switching — it's calling Retention every year (Q1).

Once-a-Year, This Pays For Itself Many Times Over

If you've been with Spectrum more than a year and haven't called Retention recently, you're almost certainly paying $20-30/mo more than you need to. The full 25-page guide above has the exact call script, the bill audit checklist, and a worksheet for stay-vs-switch decisions. Want me to do the legwork instead? Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
