AT&T Fiber Internet — A Plain-English Guide

1 Which plan tier do I actually need?

Four tiers; the right one is the cheapest that comfortably handles your peak hour:

1. Fiber 300 ($50/mo) — 1-2 person household, light streaming, email.
2. Fiber 500 ($65/mo) — the sweet spot for most homes.
3. Fiber 1 Gig ($80/mo) — heavy streaming, work-from-home, future-proofing.
4. Fiber 5 Gig ($125/mo) — almost nobody needs this (requires 2.5GbE Ethernet to even use).

You can change tiers anytime with a phone call — no truck roll. So don't agonize. Start at Fiber 500 and adjust if needed.

2 Should I let AT&T do the install, or self-install?

If AT&T offers self-install at your address, the kit arrives in 2-3 days and the setup takes about 20 minutes (plug BGW320 into the existing ONT, wait, you're online). If there's no ONT yet, AT&T sends a technician — 2-4 hour visit, sometimes $99 setup fee.

I can do the self-install for you for $99 flat if you'd rather not deal with it — I'll also turn on the bridge-mode trick (next question) while I'm there.

3 The BGW320 Wi-Fi is mediocre — what do I do?

This is the dirty secret of AT&T Fiber. As a modem the BGW320 is rock-solid, but as a Wi-Fi router it's a generation behind. Houses bigger than 1,500 sq ft almost always have dead zones.

The fix is a mesh Wi-Fi system (Eero, Orbi, Deco, etc.) put in front of the BGW320 in IP Passthrough mode. That tells the BGW320 to stop trying to be a router and hand the job to the mesh. About 45 minutes to set up; transforms how the house feels online.

1. Plug your mesh router's main unit into the BGW320's Ethernet port 1.
2. Web browser to 192.168.1.254; sign in with the Device Access Code on the BGW320 sticker.
3. Firewall → IP Passthrough. Allocation Mode: Passthrough. Default Server: DHCPS-fixed. Pick your mesh router.
4. Save. Disable the BGW320 Wi-Fi (Home Network → Wi-Fi → untick both bands).

4 I want to switch from Spectrum without losing internet for a day.

This is the smooth way:

1. Order AT&T Fiber FIRST — pick an install date. Don't cancel Spectrum yet.
2. Install day comes. Fiber gets set up while Spectrum is still running.
3. Test the fiber thoroughly for 1-2 weeks (speed test, video calls, security cameras, smart home).
4. Once you're confident, call Spectrum to cancel. Decline retention offers politely.
5. Return Spectrum's equipment within 30 days — get a UPS receipt. Watch the final bill for a bogus equipment fee.

Heads up: if you use a charter.net or spectrum.net email address, set up forwarding to Gmail / iCloud BEFORE cancelling. Don't lose 20 years of email.

5 What's this $5 autopay discount I keep hearing about?

AT&T gives you $5/month off AND a price lock if you enable BOTH autopay AND paperless billing. The price lock is the real prize — it freezes your monthly rate so AT&T can't quietly raise it next year. Turn both on within your first 30 days (AT&T app → Billing → Manage payment method).

If your autopay card later expires, the discount AND the price lock disappear. Update the card immediately.

6 What if I can't get fiber at all?

Then don't pay fiber prices for AT&T's non-fiber products. The honest options for non-fiber Portage County:

1. Spectrum cable — most reliable non-fiber option. Watch for the 12-month promo trap.
2. T-Mobile 5G Home Internet ($50/mo) — if you have good T-Mobile cell coverage at your house. Several rural clients of mine swear by it.
3. AT&T Internet Air — fixed wireless; OK as an AT&T cell bundle.
4. AT&T DSL — last resort, very slow.

Check att.com/internet yearly — fiber is still expanding in Portage County. Streets that were Spectrum-only two years ago are now fiber-eligible.
