Claude (Anthropic) — A Plain-English Guide

1 Why would I pick Claude over ChatGPT?

Honestly, both are excellent and you can't go wrong with either. That said, here's where Claude shines for the customers I've shown it to:

1. It writes more naturally. Less of that "as an AI language model" stiffness. Emails and letters come out sounding like a human wrote them.
2. It's better at long things. If you paste in a 10-page document and say "summarize this," Claude handles it better than most.
3. It makes up facts less often. No chatbot is perfect, but Claude is more likely to say "I'm not sure" instead of inventing an answer.

ChatGPT has the edge on voice mode and image generation. So pick based on what you'll use it for.

2 Is Claude free?

Yes — the free version is the one most of my customers use, and it covers everyday tasks just fine. The paid plan is Claude Pro at $20 a month, which gets you a lot more daily usage and access to the smartest version of the model. Try the free one for a few weeks. If you find yourself running into "you've used your free messages" notices a lot, then Pro is probably worth it.

3 How do I actually use it?

Two ways, both equally easy:

1. In your web browser. Go to claude.ai, sign up with an email, and start typing. Works on any computer or tablet.
2. The Claude app. Search "Claude by Anthropic" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). Sign in with the same email and your conversations follow you between phone and computer.

That's the whole setup. There's nothing else to configure.

4 What's it actually good at?

The things I use Claude for almost every day:

1. Drafting emails and letters. "Help me write a polite email to my insurance company asking about a denied claim."
2. Explaining things you don't understand. "Explain in plain English what 'Medicare Part D donut hole' means."
3. Brainstorming. "Give me five gift ideas for a 75-year-old man who likes woodworking."
4. Reading long documents. Paste in a contract or a long article and ask for a summary or key points.
5. Proofreading. Type or paste anything you've written and ask "any typos or unclear sentences here?"

5 What about my privacy?

Here's the honest, current picture on privacy: as of late 2025, Anthropic uses your conversations to help train Claude unless you turn that off. When you first sign up you're asked to make that choice, and you can change your answer anytime under Settings → Privacy. If you'd rather your chats stay out of training, just switch that setting off — it takes a few seconds, and I'm happy to do it with you.

Common-sense rules still apply: don't paste in your Social Security number, full credit card, banking passwords, or anything you wouldn't write on a postcard. For everything else — recipes, emails, questions — you're fine.

6 Does Claude ever get things wrong?

Yes. Less often than some, but it does. Claude is more likely than ChatGPT to admit when it doesn't know something, but it can still confidently state a wrong fact, date, or phone number now and then. The rule I give every customer: if it matters, double-check it. A regular Google search or a phone call to the actual place is always the right move for anything important — appointments, medical questions, anything legal or financial.
