You plugged in a second screen and got "No Signal" — or nothing at all. Nine times out of ten it's a loose cable, a monitor listening to the wrong input, or Windows sitting in the wrong display mode. All free fixes, all doable in minutes, in plain English.

A blank second monitor almost never means broken hardware

A picture only reaches that second screen when five links hold at once: the computer, its port, the cable, the monitor's port, and the monitor's input setting. When any one link lets go, the screen goes blank — and most of the time it's a plug that isn't quite seated or a monitor listening to HDMI 2 while your cable sits in HDMI 1. Genuinely dead parts are the rare case, not the common one.

The steps below are the ones I run on house calls, in the order a technician actually checks them — cheapest and most likely first. Most people are done before they ever open a Windows menu. No jargon. No judgment. No rushing.

Step 1 — Start at the monitor: power and the Input button

  • Find the monitor's power light. No light? Press its power button (often hidden under the bottom edge) and check the wall outlet or power strip.
  • Press the monitor's Input or Source button and step through the choices — HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DisplayPort, VGA — pausing a few seconds on each. Match it to the socket your cable actually uses; the label is printed right next to the plug.
  • A screen that says "No Signal" is good news: the monitor works and is waiting. The problem is upstream.

Step 2 — Reseat the cable, then swap-test it

  • Unplug both ends completely and push them back in until fully home. VGA and DVI plugs have thumbscrews — snug them.
  • Try a different port on the computer, and the other socket on the monitor (then re-match the Input button).
  • Borrow a known-good cable — the HDMI cable behind your TV is a fine tester. If the borrowed one works, a replacement runs about $10–$15.

Step 3 — Press Win + P and choose Extend

  • Hold the Windows key and tap P. Four choices slide out: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only.
  • Extend is the one most people want — two screens acting as one wide desk.
  • If Windows was set to "PC screen only," your perfectly healthy monitor was being deliberately ignored. Mystery solved.

Step 4 — Click the Detect button

  1. Right-click an empty spot on the desktop and choose Display settings.
  2. Scroll to Multiple displays and click to expand it.
  3. Click Detect (some versions label it "Detect other display").
  4. If the monitor appears as a numbered box up top, you're in business. If Windows says it found nothing, believe it — no signal is reaching the computer, so it's back to cables, ports, or the dock.

Step 5 — The two restarts that fix stubborn cases

  • Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B — the screen blinks for a second and Windows restarts just its graphics system, without closing your work. Safe, and surprisingly effective.
  • Then a full restart: leave the monitor plugged in and powered ON, click Start → Power → Restart, and give it a full minute after signing in.
  • Still nothing? Run Windows Update (Settings → Windows Update), including Optional updates, where display driver updates often wait.

Using a dock or USB-C hub? Read this first

  • Not every USB-C port carries video — it needs "DisplayPort Alt Mode" or Thunderbolt, often marked with a tiny DisplayPort or lightning-bolt symbol. If the port can't do video, no dock plugged into it ever will.
  • Plug in the dock's own power brick — many docks drop monitors when running on laptop power alone.
  • DisplayLink-style docks need their driver installed from the dock maker or displaylink.com. No driver, no picture.
  • The two-minute test: plug the monitor straight into the laptop's HDMI port. Works direct? The dock, its power, or its driver is the suspect.

The HDMI splitter trap

An HDMI splitter — one plug in, two out — does not give you two independent screens. It photocopies one picture onto both monitors, always. To truly extend, you need two separate video outputs, a real docking station on a video-capable USB-C port, or a DisplayLink adapter.
