When an AI Gadget's Company Shuts Down: What You're Really Buying

Many AI gadgets are really a service in a box, and a service can end. Here is what happened to the Humane AI Pin and the Limitless Pendant, and how to protect your money and data. Want a second opinion before you buy? My number is (330) 200-8042.
Product or Service?
A toaster is a product. Many AI gadgets are really a service in a box — and services can end. This guide uses two real examples, the Humane AI Pin and the Limitless Pendant, to show how it happens and gives five simple rules to protect your money and your data. There's a printable 29-page version up top.
Common Questions
1 Why would a gadget stop working if a company closes?
Because the smart part often runs on the company's servers. The device is little more than a microphone. When the service is turned off, the AI features go with it.
2 What happened to the Humane AI Pin?
It was discontinued, its assets were sold to HP, and the cloud service was shut down on February 28, 2025. Pins lost their AI features and were largely useless afterward.
3 What happened to the Limitless Pendant?
The company was acquired by Meta, pendant sales stopped in December 2025, and support is winding down. Check the company's announcement for dates and export your data.
4 How do I protect myself?
Buy for what it does for you now, prefer established makers, avoid prepaying for years, back up your data, and keep your receipt and return window.
5 Can I get a refund if a service ends?
Sometimes. It depends on the company, the date and where you bought. Start with the store or your credit card company.
6 Should I avoid new AI gadgets?
Not necessarily. Just buy carefully and keep a Plan B.
Would You Rather I Just Help?
