About Smart Garage Door Openers
If you've bought a garage door opener in the last 10 years, there's a good chance it has Wi-Fi and an app. The app is called myQ if you have Chamberlain or LiftMaster (75% of the US market). All myQ does the same things: open and close from your phone, share access with family, schedule auto-close at 10 PM, get notifications when the door moves. Useful — if you can get the app working. This guide walks through setup, sharing, the offline troubleshooting order, and why your garage isn't haunted when it opens "by itself."
2024 update: Chamberlain removed Alexa and Google Home support from myQ. The fix is a $35 device called Ratgdo — full native support for Alexa, Google, AND Apple HomeKit. Covered in the PDF.

1 Is my opener myQ-compatible?
- Chamberlain/LiftMaster from 2014+: built-in myQ. Just download the app.
- Chamberlain/LiftMaster older than 2014: add a Smart Garage Hub ($40). Plugs in, adds Wi-Fi.
- Genie: use the Aladdin Connect retrofit kit ($60).
- Craftsman: some use myQ — check the badge.
- Any opener — alternative path: Ratgdo ($35) works with Chamberlain/LiftMaster and adds Alexa/Google/HomeKit.
2 The app says "offline." What do I check?
- Is your home Wi-Fi working? Try Wi-Fi on your phone at home.
- Unplug the myQ hub (or opener) for 60 seconds. Plug back in. Solves 80% of cases.
- Force-quit the myQ app on your phone and reopen.
- Reboot the home router.
- myQ servers may be down — check status at chamberlain.com.
- If still offline: re-pair the hub from scratch (Wi-Fi password may have changed).
3 Why is my garage opening "by itself"? (It's not haunted.)
- Stuck button on a remote (most common). Pull batteries from all remotes for 24 hours. Add back one at a time until you find which has a sticky button.
- Wall switch jammed. Press and release the wall switch a few times to free it. If it still triggers, replace the switch ($30).
- Neighbor's old opener interferes (rare — pre-2005 openers with fixed codes). Time to upgrade.
- Old keypad code guessed. Change the outdoor keypad code to something non-obvious.
- Modern myQ openers use encrypted rolling codes — almost impossible to remotely hack.
4 How do I share access with family / dog walker / contractor?
- Family member (full access): add as a co-owner. They download myQ, create an account, you invite their email. Full app on their phone.
- Dog walker, contractor, house sitter: add as a guest. Limited access — open/close only, can revoke instantly. Optionally set time windows ("Mon–Fri 7 AM – 5 PM") or end dates.
- Both are FREE. No monthly fee. myQ Premium is a scam — see below.
5 Can I close the garage from far away?
- Yes. Open myQ app from anywhere with cell signal. Tap the door, tap close, confirm.
- Takes 10–15 seconds. Status updates in app when done.
- If close fails: photo-eye sensors at door bottom may be blocked. App will tell you.
- Best feature for anxious drivers: set up the "auto-close at 10 PM" schedule with a 5-minute warning. Catches you when you forget.
Watch Out For: myQ Scams
⚠️ Two common scams targeting myQ users.
- "Your garage has been hacked" phone call — claiming to be from Chamberlain or "myQ Security." Wants you to install software, give your password, or pay a fee. Chamberlain does NOT cold-call. Hang up. If concerned, call Chamberlain directly at (800) 528-9131.
- Fake "myQ Premium" subscription — recurring credit card charge for $4.99/month or similar. The myQ app is 100% free. No premium tier exists. If you see this charge, dispute with your bank and check for malware on the device you signed up from.
