Ohio BMV Online — Renewals + REAL ID

The BMV is online now — most of it, anyway

I know. The Ohio BMV is the only place in America where you can wait an hour to be told you needed a different envelope. Good news: most of what people sit in line for is now on bmv.ohio.gov, and you can do it from the kitchen table in fifteen minutes. The line is for the things that require a photo, a thumbprint, or surrendering a license from another state.

Step 1 — Set up your OH|ID

Ohio's version of Login.gov is called OH|ID (pronounced "Oh-eye-dee"). It's free, takes 5–10 minutes, and one account covers the BMV, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the State Tax Department, and a bunch of others. Go to ohid.ohio.gov, click "Create OH|ID Account," and follow the prompts. You'll need an email address and a phone for the verification code.

Once you have an OH|ID, go to bmv.ohio.gov and click "Sign In" in the upper right. From the dashboard you can do almost everything except the things that require a fresh photo.

Step 2 — What you can do online (the easy stuff)

• Renew your driver's license — if your current license isn't expired by more than 6 months, you haven't had a license suspension recently, and the photo on file is less than 8 years old. About $26. Card arrives by mail in 10 business days.
• Renew your vehicle registration — the sticker. About $34.50 for a passenger car plus the Portage County local fee. Sticker arrives in about a week.
• Change of address — free. Updates both your license and registration. Do this before you renew anything else.
• Order a replacement license if yours is lost or stolen (no photo change). About $26.
• Get a driving record — a 2-year or 5-year history. Useful for some employers, some insurance shopping. About $5.
• Check your driver's license status — see if there are any holds, points, or open issues. Free.
• Schedule a road test or knowledge test appointment.
• Pre-fill the in-person paperwork for everything that does require a visit — saves about 15 minutes at the counter.

Step 3 — REAL ID — what you need to know

Starting May 7, 2025, Ohio drivers needed a REAL ID-compliant license (the one with the gold star in the upper right) to board a domestic flight or enter a federal building. If you've already got the star, you're done — your card just renews normally.

If you don't have the star yet, getting one requires an in-person visit with original documents — they can't do it by mail. You'll need to bring:

• Proof of full legal name — original birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or naturalization certificate. Photocopies don't count.
• Proof of Social Security number — Social Security card, W-2, 1099, or a paystub with the full number.
• Two proofs of Ohio residency — utility bill, property tax bill, mortgage statement, bank statement, insurance card. Different addresses on each one will get you sent home.
• Proof of name changes — marriage license, divorce decree, or court order. This is the one most folks forget. If your birth certificate says "Margaret Smith" and your current name is "Margaret Wilson," you need every legal document that links the two names. All originals.

Step 4 — Portage County BMV offices and how to avoid the line

The closest BMV offices to most of Bill's customers:

• Ravenna BMV — 6249 St Rte 44, Ravenna. Mon–Fri 8am–5pm, Saturday 8am–1pm. Almost always the shortest wait in Portage County.
• Kent BMV — 1763 St Rte 59, Kent (Brimfield plaza). Mon–Fri 8am–5pm, Saturday 8am–1pm. Busier than Ravenna.
• Akron Deputy Registrars — there are several in Summit County if Ravenna and Kent are slammed. Tallmadge and Cuyahoga Falls are both reasonable.

How to skip the line: use the Get In Line Online feature on bmv.ohio.gov — pick your office and your service, and they'll text you when you're about 15 minutes from being called. Show up then, not before. Best invention since power steering.

Best times: Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday between 9:30am and 11am. Avoid the first Monday of the month, the day after a holiday, and the last week of any month. Saturday mornings book up by 9am.

Step 5 — Things that still require a real human

• First-time Ohio license (moving from another state).
• REAL ID upgrade (requires original documents).
• License with a different name than your last renewal (requires the marriage/divorce paperwork).
• Restoration after a suspension.
• Commercial driver's license (CDL) anything.
• A new photo if it's been more than 8 years.

Watch out for fake BMV websites

Google "Ohio BMV renewal" and the first few results are usually ads from "DMV.com" or "DMVRenewal.org" or similar — these are private companies that charge $30–$50 to fill out the same form you can fill out free on the real site. The only real site is bmv.ohio.gov. Bookmark it.
