Your Medical Alert Pendant — A Plain-English Guide

Lifeline, Bay Alarm, Medical Guardian, MobileHelp — compared honestly. Fall detection, the real story. Hidden fees, how to cancel, and the scams that target seniors.
About Medical Alert Pendants
The pendant is one of the few pieces of tech that can save your life. It's also one of the most aggressively marketed — five different companies, ten different plans, multi-year contracts hidden in the small print, and door-to-door scammers pretending to be from "Medicare." This guide cuts through the noise. It covers the four brands worth considering (Bay Alarm Medical, Philips Lifeline, Medical Guardian, MobileHelp), explains what fall detection actually does (and doesn't) catch, and walks through the questions that decide which kind of pendant you actually need.
Bill's typical recommendation: Bay Alarm Medical, cellular in-home + mobile bundle, fall detection on. About $40–$45/month. No contract. The PDF guide goes much deeper.
Common Questions
1 Which brand should I buy?
- For most seniors I work with: Bay Alarm Medical. No long-term contract, no activation fee, fast monitoring center, $25–$45/month.
- If you want the most-recognized brand: Philips Lifeline — solid service, but watch the activation and equipment fees.
- Avoid: the famous TV brand with the 3-year contract. The service is fine; the contract is a trap.
- Always shop two brands before buying. Mention the competitor — you'll get a free month or a waived activation fee almost every time.
2 Is fall detection really worth the extra $10/month?
- Yes — for most seniors living alone. Independent testing shows it catches 85–95% of hard falls and triggers automatically.
- It will false-trigger occasionally (sitting down hard, dropping the pendant on tile). The operator calls, you say "I'm fine, false alarm" — no fee, no record.
- The whole point is the "long lie" — preventing hours on the floor when you can't reach the button.
- If the budget is tight, drop other add-ons before this one.
3 In-home, mobile, or both?
- In-home only ($25–$35): base station + pendant. Works within ~1,000 ft of the base. Good if you're home almost all the time.
- Mobile / on-the-go ($35–$50): pendant has its own cellular and GPS. Works anywhere. Battery charges nightly.
- Bundle ($40–$55): both, on one account. Usually the best value for someone who's home most days but drives or walks twice a week.
4 Does Medicare cover a medical alert pendant?
- No. Original Medicare does not cover pendants. Period.
- Anyone who tells you Medicare pays is either selling something else, scraping your Medicare number, or running a scam.
- Some Medicare Advantage plans bundle a pendant as a perk — check your plan documents or call the insurance company directly. Don't trust a sales pitch.
- Real coverage options: Ohio Medicaid PASSPORT (call Portage Co Aging at (330) 896-9172), VA Aid & Attendance for veterans, long-term care insurance, HSA/FSA.
5 How do I cancel without a penalty?
- Call customer service. Have the account number ready. Say "I want to cancel my service, effective today."
- Get a confirmation number and the name of the rep. Write both on the bill.
- Ask for a return label. Ship the equipment within 7 days, with tracking.
- Watch the next bank statement for one more autopay. If it happens after the cancel date, call and request a refund.
- If they stall: certified letter with return receipt to the company address. Creates a paper trail.
Watch Out For: The "Free Pendant" Robocall Scam
⚠️ "You qualify for a FREE medical alert pendant!" — hang up.
Real pendant companies don't cold-call seniors offering free equipment. The pitch is always: free pendant, then a credit card for "just shipping," then mystery charges and stolen identity. Sometimes they namedrop AARP or Medicare — both are lies; neither sends pendants by phone.
Same scam in Facebook-ad form. Bright graphic, "Seniors over 65 — FREE pendant if you click here!" — if a Facebook ad asks for a credit card on the first page, it's a scam.
If you're ever unsure: call me first at (330) 200-8042 before you press 1, click, or hand over a card. Always free, no judgment.
Want a Real Person?
Choosing a pendant feels permanent and confusing — and the salespeople aren't on your side. I am. Free 5-minute phone consultation to talk through brands and what you actually need. If you want me to come help research, place the order, set up the base station, mount a shower button, and run the first test call — flat $99 first visit, 30-day follow-up included.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.
Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
