Make Your Phone Boring, and Take Your Day Back

Phones are designed to hold your attention, but you can turn that down. This guide covers six levers that work on any phone: grayscale, app limits, fewer notifications, a calm home screen, hiding social apps, and charging outside the bedroom. It ties together our iPhone and Android detox guides. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 What is the easiest first step?

Turn on grayscale. It's free, takes a minute, and makes the screen far less tempting. Both iPhone and Android have it built in.

2 Do app limits really work?

They give you a clear stopping point. You can usually tap past them, but the pause alone often makes you stop and decide. Start with a generous limit and tighten slowly.

3 Should I turn off all notifications?

Most, not all. Keep calls and texts from family and your doctor's office, plus anything safety-related. Turn off the rest, including red badge numbers.

4 Is it good to charge the phone outside the bedroom?

Many people find it helps. If you live alone or rely on the phone for safety, keep it within reach and allow family calls through.

5 Will I lose my accounts if I remove a social app?

No. Deleting the app doesn't delete your account. You can reinstall it or use the website from a computer or tablet.

6 Where do I find the exact steps?

See our Digital-Detox Settings on iPhone and Digital-Detox Settings on Android guides for button-by-button instructions.
