Your Mac already keeps an honest report card on its own battery — two screens, three numbers, no apps to buy. Here's how to read them, which charging habits actually matter (and which are twenty years out of date), and how to decide whether a worn battery is worth replacing.

A worn battery isn't a broken Mac

Every rechargeable battery ever made is a consumable part. Yours is wearing out right now, a little, and that's normal — not neglect, not a defect, not something you did wrong. Apple designs a MacBook battery to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 1,000 charge cycles. That's the whole promise. Not forever. So the useful questions aren't “how do I stop this,” because you can't. They're: how do I slow it down, how do I read the numbers honestly, and how do I know when it's finally time to spend money?

There's a lot of confident nonsense online about laptop batteries, plus a whole industry of apps selling a fix for a problem most people don't have. Apple's own position on those is worth quoting: third-party apps that report battery-health conditions might not be accurate, and it's best to rely on what macOS reports. Everything below comes from Apple's published support pages and from what I actually see on kitchen tables — written for macOS Tahoe 26, though if your Mac is a version or two behind, the same words sit in nearly the same places.

The 60-second version

  • Check the two numbers. Apple menu > System Settings > Battery. Battery Health reads Normal or Service Recommended. Click the info button beside it for Maximum Capacity.
  • “Service Recommended” is not an emergency. Apple's own words: you can safely continue to use your Mac.
  • Leave Optimized Battery Charging ON. It's the single best thing on this list, and it's already switched on.
  • Heat is the real enemy. Apple says ambient temperatures above 95°F (35°C) can permanently damage battery capacity. Don't charge it under a blanket.
  • Plugged in all day is fine on a modern Mac — better still if you set an 80% Charge Limit on a desk machine.
  • Skip the battery “optimizer” apps. The real numbers are already on your Mac, free.

Reading your battery, click by click

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner, then System Settings.
  2. Click Battery in the list down the left side. You may need to scroll down to find it.
  3. Read Battery Health. It says either Normal (“the battery is functioning normally”) or Service Recommended.
  4. Click the small info button — the circled “i” — next to it. Depending on your model you'll see Battery Condition, Maximum Capacity (a percentage of what it held when new), and sometimes Manage battery longevity.
  5. For the cycle count: hold Option and click the Apple menu — “About This Mac” becomes System Information. Click it, then click Power under Hardware. Cycle Count is under Battery Information.
  6. Write all three numbers down with today's date. One reading a year turns a vague worry into a trend line.
  7. On an older Mac with no Battery Health section: hold Option and click the battery icon in the menu bar. Older macOS reports Replace Soon, Replace Now, or Service Battery there.

What a “charge cycle” actually is

This is the most misunderstood number in the whole subject, and Apple's definition is friendlier than people expect: a charge cycle happens when you use all of the battery's power — but not necessarily in one sitting. Apple's own example: use half the charge Monday and recharge fully, do the same Tuesday, and that's one cycle, not two. So plugging in at lunch doesn't “use up a charge.” Topping off costs you essentially nothing. For every MacBook Air and MacBook Pro of roughly the last fifteen years, including all the Apple-silicon models, Apple rates the maximum cycle count at 1,000. Most households put 200 to 300 cycles a year on a laptop, which puts 1,000 somewhere in the neighborhood of three to five years of ordinary use. And you can keep using a battery past its maximum cycle count — Apple says so plainly. You'll just notice less runtime.

Optimized Battery Charging and the 80% Charge Limit

Optimized Battery Charging has been in macOS since Big Sur, it's on by default, and it's the most valuable battery feature Apple ships. It learns your daily charging routine — on the Mac itself — and delays charging past 80% when it expects you'll be plugged in a long while, aiming to finish the charge shortly before you need it. While it's holding, the battery menu says “Charging On Hold.” That's the feature working, not a fault. Need 100% right now? Click the battery icon in the menu bar and choose Charge to Full Now. Charge Limit goes a step further: on macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later with an Apple-silicon Mac, you can cap what the Mac considers full anywhere from 80% to 100%. Both live in System Settings > Battery > the info button next to Charging. Worth knowing: with either feature on, your Mac still charges fully now and then on purpose, to keep its percentage estimate honest.

Charging habits: what matters, what doesn't

  • Doesn't matter — “don't leave it plugged in.” Old advice for older battery chemistry. Modern Macs manage charging themselves.
  • Doesn't matter — “drain it fully once a month to calibrate.” Not a thing on any Mac you can buy today.
  • Doesn't matter — “top-ups wear it out.” No. A cycle is a full battery's worth of use, however you spread it.
  • Matters a lot — heat. Apple's ideal comfort zone is 62° to 72°F, a MacBook works best between 50° and 95°F, and above 95°F can permanently damage capacity. Soft surfaces are the usual culprit: a bed, a couch cushion, a closed bag while charging.
  • Matters — not living at 100% for months, which is exactly what Optimized Charging and the Charge Limit prevent.
  • Matters — not living at 0% either. A battery left flat for a long time can fall into a deep discharge state and stop holding a charge at all.
  • Matters — storing a Mac for months. Apple says charge to about 50%, power it down, keep it cool and dry, and top it back to 50% every six months.

Getting more hours out of today's charge

  1. Turn the screen brightness down. Apple lists this first for a reason — the display is usually the hungriest thing in the machine.
  2. Turn on Low Power Mode. System Settings > Battery. On Macs with an Energy Mode section you get separate pop-up menus for “On battery” and “On power adapter” — my usual recommendation is Low Power on battery, Automatic on the adapter. On macOS Sequoia 15.1 and later you can also switch modes straight from Control Center.
  3. Actually quit apps you're done with (Command-Q), and close the browser tabs you've finished reading.
  4. Unplug what you're not using — external drives, SD cards, and especially a phone charging off your Mac's port, which Apple notes drains the Mac faster.
  5. Turn off Wi-Fi if you're offline anyway. It uses power just looking for networks.
  6. Hunt the real drain. Press Command-Space, type Activity Monitor, open the Energy tab, and sort by Energy Impact. Something you don't recognize sitting at the top hour after hour is worth investigating — and the Preventing Sleep column explains a Mac that drains overnight with the lid shut.

“Service Recommended” — and the honest replace decision

Apple's sentence deserves reading twice: the battery's ability to hold charge is less than when it was new, or it isn't functioning normally — you can continue to use your Mac, and if the lowered capacity is affecting your experience, you can get service. It's not a safety warning, not a deadline, and not a bill you're required to pay. On the money: Apple prices battery service per model and won't commit until they've inspected the machine, so the number to trust is the estimate on Apple's own repair page — choose Mac laptops, pick your model. As a planning figure in mid-2026, budget roughly $150 to $300. If you have AppleCare+ and the battery holds less than 80% of original capacity, Apple replaces it at no charge, so check coverage before you pay anyone. I'd replace the battery when the Mac is otherwise fast enough, runs current macOS, and you'll keep it two or more years. I'd skip it when the Mac already frustrates you for other reasons — a new battery fixes none of those — or when it genuinely lives plugged in at a desk, where a worn battery is a cosmetic problem.

Battery snake oil, and the one thing to take seriously

Ignore the “battery doctor” apps: Apple states directly that third-party apps reporting battery-health conditions might not be accurate, and that it's best to rely on what macOS reports. Ignore any web pop-up claiming your battery is “critically damaged” — a web page cannot see your battery, and that's the tech-support scam wearing a new hat. Ignore cleaner bundles promising better battery life. But do take one thing seriously: a swelling battery. The signs are physical, not on screen — the trackpad stops clicking properly, the bottom case bulges, the laptop rocks on a flat table, or the lid won't close flush. If you see that: stop charging it, shut it down, set it on a hard non-flammable surface, don't press or pry, and call Apple or an authorized provider. That one goes to the front of the line. Meanwhile the thing that genuinely ages a battery early — a laptop used on a comforter, plugged in, every evening for years — nobody warns you about. So this is the plain version: read your own numbers, keep it cool, leave Optimized Charging on, and make the replace decision with a repair estimate in front of you instead of a bad feeling.
