Live TV Streaming Services — Bill's 2026 Comparison

The one thing nobody tells you

Every week I get the same call. "Bill, I want to cut cable, but I have to have the History Channel." Or ESPN. Or all three Hallmark channels. Or just the Browns and the news. Every streaming service is good at a different thing, and no two carry the same channels. The question isn't "which service is best" — it's "which one carries what you watch?" This guide is the lookup table.

The seven services worth knowing in 2026

• YouTube TV — $82.99/mo. The all-rounder. 100+ channels including PBS, locals in 98% of markets, unlimited DVR, 3 streams. The default recommendation if "just pick one" is the answer.
• Hulu + Live TV — $89.99/mo. Same shape as YouTube TV, plus Disney+ and ESPN Select are in the bundle. 95+ channels, unlimited DVR. Best for families with kids already in the Disney ecosystem.
• Fubo — $88.99 Pro / $98.99 Elite. Sports-first. 216+ channels on Pro, 280+ on Elite. Carries Bally / FanDuel regional sports networks — meaning Cavs and other RSN-bound teams. NBC affiliates restored June 10, 2026 after the NBCUniversal dispute.
• Sling TV — $45.99 Orange / $50.99 Blue / $65.99 combo. The budget all-rounder. Orange has ESPN, Blue has news + Fox/NBC locals in some markets. No ABC, no CBS. Combo gives you both halves.
• DirecTV Stream — $89.99 to about $160/mo. The cable-TV experience, ported. Most channels of anybody. Most expensive too. Choice tier and up include regional sports networks.
• Philo — $25/mo. 70+ entertainment and lifestyle channels (HGTV, AMC, Discovery, Hallmark, History, Lifetime). No sports. No locals. Unlimited DVR. Bundle+ tier at $33 adds HBO Max, AMC+, Discovery+.
• Frndly TV — $8.99 to $12.99/mo. The cheapest live TV in America. All three Hallmark channels, History, A&E, Lifetime, MeTV, Weather Channel. No sports, no locals, no news beyond Newsmax. The clean pick for folks who don't want a bundle.

"Where can I get the History Channel?" — the channel lookup

This is the question I get most. Here's the answer:

• History Channel — cheapest on Frndly TV ($8.99). Also on Philo, Sling Blue, Hulu, YouTube TV, DirecTV Stream.
• Hallmark (all three channels) — cheapest on Frndly TV. Also on Philo, Hulu, YouTube TV, DirecTV Stream. Not on Sling.
• ESPN — cheapest on Sling Orange ($45.99). Also on Hulu, YouTube TV, DirecTV Stream, Fubo Pro.
• Regional sports (Guardians, Cavs, etc.) — Fubo or DirecTV Stream Choice. Not on YouTube TV or Hulu, ever.
• CNN, MSNBC, Fox News — all on Sling Blue ($50.99), Hulu, YouTube TV, DirecTV Stream, Fubo.
• HGTV, Food Network, Discovery, AMC — all on Philo ($25) and up.

What really bumps the bill

The sticker price is rarely the real price. Four things quietly inflate every streaming bill:

1. 4K or unlimited streams. YouTube TV charges $9.99 for the "4K Plus" tier, which is really about getting more than 3 simultaneous streams at home. Worth it if you have three TVs.
2. Unlimited DVR. Sling adds $5 for it. Everyone else includes it (Philo deletes after a year).
3. Premium movie channels. HBO Max about $18, Showtime $11, Starz $11. DirecTV Premier rolls them all in.
4. Sports add-ons. NFL RedZone $11/mo, NBA League Pass varies, MLB Extra Innings $30/mo in season.

How to switch (without ending up with both bills)

1. Sign up for the new service. Take the free trial.
2. Install the app on every TV. A $40 Roku or Fire TV Stick fixes any TV without a built-in app.
3. Watch a week. Make sure everyone in the house can find their shows.
4. Now cancel cable. Call retention, have the new bill in front of you. They'll offer 30% off — say no thanks.
5. Return the cable equipment within 30 days. Otherwise it's $200–$300 per box.

What I'd pick if I were you

Five real-shaped households from my customer base:

• Sports family (Guardians, Cavs, Browns): Fubo Elite at $83.99 — covers the RSNs and the locals.
• Retired couple, news + Hallmark: YouTube TV at $82.99 — easiest to use, easy to leave.
• Single retiree, just Hallmark + History: Frndly TV Classic+ at $8.99, plus a $25 antenna for ABC/CBS/FOX/NBC over the air. Saves $1,500+ a year off cable.
• "Just give me everything": DirecTV Stream Premier at about $160 — closest thing to keeping cable.
• Sports bar in your house, Sundays included: YouTube TV + NFL Sunday Ticket — about $112/mo amortized.
