1 What makes the iPhone 17 special?

Here's what's worth knowing, in plain English:

1. A bigger, smoother screen than before The screen grew to 6.3 inches and now scrolls extra-smoothly — something that used to be a Pro-only feature. Text and photos look great, and it's still easy to hold.
2. A front camera that turns to fit the group The camera you use for selfies and video calls is smarter now — it can automatically widen to fit everyone in the picture. Handy for family photos at arm's length.
3. A faster chip and a bit more battery The A19 chip keeps things quick, and you get about an hour more screen time per charge than the model before it.
4. Plenty of storage to start It begins at 256GB of storage — room for lots of photos without paying extra.

2 Is the iPhone 17 right for me?

It's a great fit for almost everyone. If you want a great iPhone that will last for years without paying Pro prices, this is the one I recommend most often.

Consider a different model if: If money is tight, the budget iPhone 17e does the same core things for less. If you're a keen photographer or want the very newest, look at the iPhone 18 Pro.

3 How much does it cost, and where should I buy it?

Heads up: Apple raised this phone's starting price from $799 to $899 in September 2026. That's the current price for the 256GB model. Trade-in deals from carriers can bring it down a lot — always check the current price before you buy.

For the great majority of my customers, the iPhone 17 is the right choice. It does everything — calls, texts, photos, video calls, email, maps, the lot — beautifully, and it'll stay up to date for years. You don't need the Pro unless you're serious about photos or video. If the price feels steep, the iPhone 17e is the budget version and still excellent. Buy from Apple, a carrier (ask about trade-in credit), or a trusted store — not a stranger online.

4 How do I move everything from my old phone?

From another iPhone, Apple's Quick Start does the heavy lifting: turn on the new phone, set it beside the old one, and follow the prompts — your photos, contacts and messages come across. Coming from an Android phone takes a bit more care, and that's one of my most common calls.

5 How do I make it easier to see and hear?

Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size and drag the slider; turn on Bold Text for heavier letters. For much bigger text, use Settings > Accessibility > Larger Text. Turn on captions for videos, and know the phone works with many hearing aids. If a full iPhone feels like too much, Assistive Access switches it to a big-button, large-text layout.

6 How do I stay safe from scams?

Your phone is safe; the tricks come by text, email and call. Apple will never call, text or email to say your account is locked or you owe money — that's always a scam. Never read back a code someone sent you, and never let anyone rush you into gift cards or quick payments. When in doubt, hang up and call someone you trust — including me.
