Do You Have to Pay a Subscription for a Smart Ring?
Published October 2026 · Last verified October 2026
Some smart rings come with an ongoing monthly or yearly fee and some do not — and it is easy to find out too late. Here is who charges, what you lose without it, and what to ask first. Rather talk it through? My number is (330) 200-8042.
Buy to Own, or Rent Your Data?
A smart ring's sticker price is only the beginning. Oura requires a paid membership for its full daily insights, while the Samsung Galaxy Ring, RingConn, and Ultrahuman do not. This guide covers what you lose without the fee, buying to own versus renting your data, and the questions to ask before you buy. There's a printable 29-page version up top.
Common Questions
1 Which smart rings need a subscription?
Oura requires a paid membership for full daily insights — an ongoing monthly or yearly fee. Samsung Galaxy Ring, RingConn, and Ultrahuman Ring Air do not require one for core features.
2 What do I lose without Oura's membership?
You generally see only limited data, so the ring does much less than the box suggests. Check Oura's current page for exactly what stays free.
3 Is a no-fee ring always cheaper?
Usually over time. Compare the ring price plus the fee over a couple of years, and check your phone is compatible.
4 What does "renting your data" mean?
With a membership ring, your access to your own sleep and heart history depends on paying. Ask whether you can export your data.
5 What should I ask before buying?
Is there an ongoing fee? What is free? Does a trial auto-renew? How do I cancel? Can I export my data? What if the company stops?
6 Is Ultrahuman sold in the US?
That has been in question since Oura's patent win at the ITC. Confirm it before you buy.
Would You Rather I Just Help?
Unsure whether a ring is worth the fee? I'll help you read the terms and compare, with nothing to sell you. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free.
