1 Is Verizon really better than T-Mobile and AT&T in Portage County?

2 Can I get Verizon Fios in Atwater?
- No. Verizon never built Fios west of central Pennsylvania, and they stopped expanding it around 2010.
- Fios exists only in NYC metro, Philly, Boston, DC, Baltimore, most of NJ and Long Island, and parts of MD and VA. Not Ohio. Not anywhere in Portage County.
- If you've been told 'you have Fios' in Atwater, you actually have Spectrum cable, AT&T Fiber, or Frontier — folks use 'Fios' as a generic word for fast internet, like 'Kleenex' for tissue.

3 Verizon myPlan — which tier do I actually need?
- Unlimited Welcome (~$65/mo with autopay/bank) — basic unlimited talk/text/data. The right answer for most senior customers.
- Unlimited Plus (~$80/mo) — adds faster 5G Ultra Wideband, 30GB hotspot, and one free perk. Worth the extra $15/mo if you'd buy Disney+ or Apple Music anyway.
- Unlimited Ultimate (~$90/mo) — adds international roaming, bigger hotspot, Apple One option. Only worth it if you travel internationally OR you already pay for Apple One Family separately.
- Critical: the -$10/line autopay discount only applies if you pay from a bank account or debit card, NOT a credit card. Verizon changed this in 2023 and it caught a LOT of folks.
4 Should I switch to Verizon 5G Home Internet?
- Maybe — but try it for 14 days before canceling cable. Verizon ships the router free with a 14-day return window.
- 5G Home ($35/mo with mobile, $50 standalone) is genuinely good at 85-300 Mbps when the signal at your house is strong.
- Portage County coverage is patchy. Good in Ravenna proper, Streetsboro, Kent center, Aurora. Spotty or none in Atwater, Suffield, Edinburg, Windham.
- Set the router near a window facing the nearest tower. Run speed tests at peak hours (7pm weekday) — that's the real test, not Sunday morning.
- If you already have reliable 300+ Mbps Spectrum, the $15-25 mobile+home discount usually isn't worth the consistency loss. If your only alternative is HughesNet or DSL, 5G Home is a huge upgrade.
5 Is Verizon worth paying more for than the competition?
