Why this brand guide exists

- Not for: Typical retired customers who want set-and-forget — get Eero or Netgear Orbi instead. Bill will help with either.
2 What's the cheapest way to get into UniFi?
- Two routes:
- Option 1 — UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra ($129) + U6 Pro AP ($159) = $288. You provide the switch (your existing one works) and ethernet to the AP.
- Option 2 — UniFi Dream Router ($199) all-in-one with gateway, switch, and AP built in. Cheaper, easier, no PoE switch ports.

3 Do I need a subscription to use UniFi?

4 How does UniFi compare to Eero or Orbi?
- Eero / Orbi: Designed for one job — easy Wi-Fi at home. Set-and-forget, gentle app, self-updates.
- UniFi: Designed for people who want to SEE and CONTROL every part of their network — VLANs for IoT, per-device bandwidth, packet inspection, guest portals, multi-site.
- Eero / Orbi will get a Portage County home online faster. UniFi lets you build things consumer gear physically can't — but someone has to do the work.
- The crossover point is usually: home office with real video calls + 15+ smart-home devices + 2,500+ sq ft + a hobbyist or remote worker who cares about the network. Below that line, get Orbi. Above it, UniFi pays off.

5 Can UniFi cameras replace Ring or Nest?
- Yes, with caveats.

- Downsides: Harder setup than plugging in a Ring (PoE-capable hardware required at every camera), no battery models, remote viewing means opening UniFi to the cloud.
- For an AirBnB or small business with 4+ cameras, UniFi Protect pays back in 18 months vs Ring Protect Pro.
- For one doorbell and one driveway cam at a single-family home, Ring is simpler and cheaper to start. Bill installs both — the right answer depends on the property.
6 What about UniFi Access (door locks) and UniFi Talk (phones)?
- UniFi Access ($199 hub + $199-299 per reader) is door entry — keycards, PIN pads, mobile credentials. Same Ubiquiti-makes-the-software model as Protect. Best for small offices, multi-family rentals, and AirBnBs that issue temporary codes.
- UniFi Talk is a full business phone system (PBX) — UniFi phones $169-$259, free PBX software running on your gateway, $9.99/mo per line for phone service through UniFi. Works great for a 3-10 employee office.
- Both require a UniFi gateway (Dream Router, UDM, UDM Pro, or Cloud Gateway). Don't try to run Access or Talk without one.
- For a typical home, skip both. For a small business already running UniFi network, Access and Talk are usually cheaper and better than the named brands.
