AT&T U-verse — A Plain-English Guide
Last verified: August 2026
Everything you actually need to know about your AT&T U-verse — no jargon, no rabbit holes. If you'd rather skip the reading and just have someone help, my number is (330) 200-8042.
The Short Version
AT&T U-verse is AT&T's old TV and internet service that ran over copper phone lines. AT&T stopped signing up new customers years ago and has been steadily moving people off it onto either AT&T Fiber or their wireless Internet Air service. If you're still on U-verse, your service still works — but you're on a phase-out plan, and at some point AT&T will ask you to switch.
Most of my customers in Portage County who call about U-verse fall into one of two camps: their TV box is acting up, or they want to know what to switch to. I'll cover both below.
Common Questions
1 Is U-verse still available where I live?
If you already have it, yes — your service continues. AT&T stopped new U-verse TV sign-ups back in 2020 and has been encouraging customers to switch ever since. For new service, AT&T will offer you either Fiber (if your street has it — most of Atwater and Ravenna doesn't yet, but Kent and Streetsboro do in spots) or Internet Air (a cellular-based home internet box that doesn't need any wiring). If you want to know what's actually available at your address, call AT&T at 800-288-2020 or have me check for you.
2 How is U-verse different from Fiber?
The wire coming into your house is the big difference:
- U-verse uses the old copper phone line. Speeds usually top out around 75–100 Mbps, often slower in practice.
- Fiber uses a glass fiber-optic line. Speeds run from 300 Mbps up to 5 Gbps. Much faster, much more reliable.
If Fiber is available at your house and the price is similar, switch. The difference is night and day for streaming and video calls.
3 My U-verse TV box keeps freezing or showing a blue screen.
The cure for 90% of U-verse box trouble is a power cycle:
- Unplug the gray gateway box (the AT&T modem with the AT&T logo) — pull the power cord from the back.
- Unplug your TV receiver box too.
- Wait a full 2 minutes. Have a sip of coffee.
- Plug the gateway back in first. Wait for all four lights on the front to go solid green (about 3–5 minutes).
- Plug the TV box back in. Give it another 2 minutes to find the signal.
If it's still frozen after that, the box itself may be failing — AT&T will swap it for free, you just have to call and wait on hold.
4 The remote stopped working — won't change channels.
- Try fresh AA batteries first. Old remotes drain batteries faster than you'd think.
- If new batteries don't fix it, the remote has lost its pairing with the TV box. Press and hold OK + 0 (zero) together for about 5 seconds — the remote should blink twice. That restarts pairing.
- If it still doesn't work, unplug the TV receiver for 30 seconds and plug it back in. The remote usually re-pairs automatically when the box boots up.
5 Should I switch — and if so, to what?
My honest recommendation depends on what you actually use:
- If you just need internet for email, Facebook, and a little YouTube — AT&T Internet Air or Spectrum Internet at the basic tier is plenty.
- If you watch streaming (Netflix, Prime, YouTube TV) with two TVs going at once — get Fiber if you can, or Spectrum's 300 Mbps tier.
- If you still want live cable-style TV — drop U-verse TV and try YouTube TV ($83/mo) or DIRECTV Stream. Both run on any decent internet connection and have a much better picture than U-verse TV ever did.
I tell folks: don't let AT&T pick the upgrade for you over the phone. They'll bundle in things you don't need. Have me look at it first.
6 How do I cancel U-verse without getting hit with fees?
Call AT&T retention at 800-288-2020 and say "I'd like to cancel my service." That routes you to the right team. If you're inside a contract, ask about upgrade-to-Fiber options that waive the early-termination fee — AT&T will usually do that to keep you as a customer. Return any leased equipment (gateway, TV box, remote) within 21 days using the prepaid return kit they'll send you, or you'll be billed for it.
Want Me to Sort It Out for You?
U-verse troubleshooting and "what should I switch to" calls are some of my most common visits. I'll diagnose the current setup, walk you through your real options, and if you decide to switch, I'll handle the install on the new gear. $99 flat. (330) 200-8042.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.
Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
