Buying Used, the Smart Way
A used mobility scooter or e-bike can be a real bargain — or a headache that won't hold a charge. The difference comes down to a handful of checks you can do before you hand over a dime: the battery, the charger, the tires and brakes, the serial number, a real test ride, and a fair price. There's a printable 29-page version up top.
Common Questions
1 What's the most important thing to check?
The battery — its age, how it was charged and stored, and its real range on a proper test ride. It's the costliest part and the one most likely to disappoint, so a tired battery can erase any bargain.
2 Does the charger really matter?
Yes — make sure the correct, working charger is included. A mismatched charger is a common cause of battery trouble, and a proper replacement must be the right manufacturer-approved part, a real cost if it's missing.
3 How do I avoid a stolen or recalled machine?
Find and record the serial number, then use it to check the machine isn't reported stolen and isn't under a recall (see our recalls guide). A seller who won't show the serial number is a red flag.
4 Why does a test ride matter so much?
A quick loop can hide a tired battery or a fault. Ride or drive it long enough to feel the real range, the brakes, and the controls — and, for a bike or mobility device, whether it fits you. A willing seller welcomes it.
5 What does a fair price look like?
Clearly less than new, with the discount reflecting age, condition, battery life, and any repairs. Price in worn tires, brakes, or a missing charger — and be very suspicious of anything far below the going rate, which usually hides a catch.
6 Can I still get parts for an older machine?
Check before you buy. A used machine from an established brand is far easier to keep running; an orphan brand with no parts — especially no replacement battery — can become an expensive paperweight. See our recalls-and-shutdowns guide.
Would You Rather I Just Help?
A few minutes of checking before you pay can save you from a costly used mistake. I'm glad to go over a listing with you or look a machine over in person — battery, charger, brakes, serial number, and whether it fits you — with nothing to sell. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.
Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
