Getting Your Battery Through Winter

Cold weather is hard on lithium batteries — less range when cold, and a long winter stored badly can sap capacity for good. The good news: a few simple habits keep your battery healthy through the coldest Ohio months. This guide covers storage, charging, and cold-weather riding — always check your maker's manual for the exact numbers. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 Can I leave the battery in the garage all winter?

Best not to if the garage freezes. Bring the battery indoors to room temperature for the winter — most lift out easily. A long winter near freezing is a common way to shorten a battery's life.

2 How charged should I store it?

Partly charged — in the middle, not full and not empty — and topped up if it drifts low over the winter. Your maker's manual gives the exact level to aim for.

3 Why does my range drop so much when it's cold?

Cold slows the battery's chemistry, so it delivers less power and usable charge. It's temporary — range returns as things warm up. Keep the battery warm until you ride to get the most from it.

4 Can I charge right after a cold ride?

Let it warm toward room temperature first. Charging a very cold battery can cause hidden, permanent damage. Bring it inside, give it time, then charge — and never force-warm it with a heater.

5 Is it safe to ride in winter?

Yes, with care: expect less range, keep the battery warm until you ride, slow down for ice, salt, and wet leaves, and light yourself up well in the short days. When roads are truly icy, there's no shame in staying home.

6 What about mobility scooters in winter?

Same battery rules — keep it and spare batteries warm, charge indoors, and don't ride to the edge of the range on a cold day, since cold cuts range just when you may rely on it. See our charging guide.
