Getting Back on a Bike, the Easy Way

An e-bike can give you back the freedom to ride — with a gentle push on the hills — but only if it feels safe and easy under you. This guide walks through step-through frames, getting the fit right, choosing a calm Class 1 bike, and building confidence in an empty lot. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 What's the most important feature for an older rider?

A low step-through frame you can mount without swinging a leg up high. Most e-bike falls happen at a standstill, getting on or off, and a step-through frame with both feet near the ground prevents a great many of them.

2 Which class of e-bike should I start with?

A Class 1 pedal-assist — the motor helps only while you pedal, and eases off at a modest speed. It's the gentlest, most natural feel and the calmest place to rebuild confidence. You can always grow into more later.

3 How do I practice safely?

Start in a big, empty, flat parking lot, helmet on, assist low. Practice pushing off, stopping with both feet ready, and slow wide turns until they feel boring. Only then move to quiet streets and, later, a trail.

4 Will I still get exercise on an e-bike?

Yes. On a pedal-assist bike you still pedal and still get a real workout — the motor just smooths out the hills and headwinds that might otherwise keep you home. It keeps many people riding who'd otherwise give it up.

5 What if my balance isn't great?

Be honest with yourself. If balancing at a stop is shaky or you've had falls, a two-wheeler may not be the right fit — an electric trike can't tip at a standstill and offers the same freedom. See our electric-trike guide.

6 Do I need a license or insurance in Ohio?

A true e-bike meeting Ohio's definition is treated like a bicycle, so the state requires no license, registration, or insurance. See our Ohio e-bike rules guide, and it's still wise to check your own homeowners or renters coverage.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
