Mobility Scooter or Power Wheelchair? Choosing What Fits Your Life
Last verified: October 2026

Finding the Device That Fits Your Life
A mobility scooter and a power wheelchair can both give back your independence, but they suit different lives. This guide helps you think through which one fits — how and where you'd use it, your home, your body, and how far you need to go. It's general information, not medical advice — lean on your care team too. There's a printable 29-page version up top.
Common Questions
1 What's the main difference between the two?
A scooter has a seat and a tiller you steer with both hands, suits someone who can walk a little and sit upright, and is great outdoors. A power chair uses a joystick, turns tightly for indoor spaces, and offers more seating support.
2 Which is better inside the house?
Usually a power chair, because it turns in a tighter circle and fits small rooms and narrow halls. Measure your doorways and tightest turns first — our at-home guide shows how.
3 How do I know which is right for me?
Start with how and where you'd use it, your ability to steer and transfer, and how long you'll sit in it — then involve your doctor, a therapist, and a supplier. It's part practical choice, part health decision.
4 What about range and the battery?
If trips are short and indoors, range matters little; for outdoor errands, choose enough range for the round trip with a cushion, since real-world range is less than the best case and drops in cold. Both come in different battery sizes.
5 Will Medicare help pay for one?
It may, for a device deemed medically necessary for use in the home, with specific rules and paperwork — it isn't automatic. See our Medicare guide, and confirm the current rules with Medicare, your doctor, and an enrolled supplier.
6 Will I need to transport it?
If so, that shapes the choice: some scooters fold or come apart for a car trunk, while full-size scooters and most power chairs are heavy and need a hoist, lift, or ramped carrier. See our scooter-in-the-car guide.
Would You Rather I Just Help?
Choosing between a scooter and a power chair is a big, personal decision. I can't give medical advice, but I'll help you think through the practical side, measure your home, and prepare good questions for your doctor, therapist, and supplier. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.
Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
