Get SOS and Medical ID Ready Before You Need Them

Emergency SOS and Medical ID are two of the most useful safety tools on a watch or phone, and they only help if you set them up ahead of time. This guide covers Apple Watch and iPhone, Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch, and how to practice without dialing 911. General information, not medical advice. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 What is Medical ID?

A card of key health information, contacts and allergies that responders can view from the lock screen. It is only as good as what you put in it.

2 How do I start Emergency SOS on an Apple Watch?

Press and hold the side button until the Emergency SOS slider appears, then keep holding or drag the slider. Settings are in the Watch app.

3 Does it work on Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch?

Yes. Pixel Watch uses a Safety and Emergency area and a crown press; Galaxy Watch uses the Galaxy Wearable app and Home-key presses. Menus change, so check your model.

4 Can I practice without calling 911?

Yes. Start the gesture, then cancel before it connects. Never place a real test call.

5 What if I start SOS by accident?

Stay on the line and tell the dispatcher it was a mistake. Do not just hang up.

6 Is anyone calling to 'activate' SOS legitimate?

No. Built-in SOS needs no payment to a stranger. Hang up and call me or the maker.
