Keeping Your E-Bike Happy and Safe
A little regular care keeps an e-bike safe, smooth, and reliable — and most of it is simpler than you'd think. This guide gives you a monthly check anyone can do in a few minutes, and draws a clear line to the jobs best left to a bike shop. No grease under the fingernails required. There's a printable 29-page version up top.
Common Questions
1 What's the most important upkeep I can do?
Check your tire pressure regularly (the right range is on the sidewall) and test your brakes before every ride. Those two cover your core safety and the most common cause of a poor-riding bike. Keep the chain clean and oiled too.
2 Can I wash my e-bike with a hose?
No — never pressure-wash or hose-blast an e-bike, as water can get into the battery, motor, and electrical connections and cause damage. Clean it with a damp cloth and gentle care, keeping water away from the electrical parts, and dry it after.
3 How do I look after the chain?
Wipe it clean of grit, then apply a little bicycle chain lubricant and wipe off the excess — a light film, not a heavy coat. How often depends on how much and in what conditions you ride; more in wet or dusty weather.
4 What should I leave to a bike shop?
Brake adjustment and pad replacement, gear tuning, motor and electrical work, wheel and bearing service, battery replacement with the correct part, and anything you're unsure of. For the e-bike-specific parts, choose a shop experienced with e-bikes.
5 How often should I get a professional tune-up?
It depends how much you ride, but a periodic tune-up — like a car service — keeps the brakes, gears, and electrical side right and catches wear early. Your home once-overs between tune-ups cover the simple stuff.
6 What if the bike feels or sounds different?
A new noise, wobble, soft brake, or rough shifting is the bike telling you something — investigate it in your once-over, and have a shop look if you can't sort it. Never ride with a safety problem you're unsure about.
Would You Rather I Just Help?
Keeping an e-bike happy is mostly simple, safe checks — tires, brakes, chain, clean and charged — and I'm glad to teach you them on your own bike so they feel easy. I'll also help you know when it's time for a shop, and point you to a good e-bike-savvy one. $99 flat for a visit, $49 on your screen, 30-day come-back-free.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.
Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
