Apple TV 4K — A Plain-English Guide
Last verified: August 2026
The small black box that turns any TV into a smart Apple device. Plays all the streaming apps, syncs with your iPhone, mirrors photos from your phone to the TV, and never sees ads. Worth the price if you already live in Apple-world.
What Makes Apple TV Different
Roku and Fire Stick play the same apps, so why pay more for Apple TV? Three reasons people pick it: (1) No ads on the home screen — Roku's home screen is full of ads. (2) Photo slideshow from your iCloud Photos — if you have an iPhone, every photo you take can show up on the TV. (3) Single-tap mirroring from your iPhone — share what's on your phone to the TV without setup.
If you don't have an iPhone, save your money and get a Roku instead.
Common Questions
1 The remote stopped working.
Apple TV's slim remote charges via USB-C — it doesn't use AA batteries. So first check:
- Plug the remote into a charger for 30 minutes.
- Point the remote at the Apple TV and hold Menu + Volume Up for 5 seconds. That re-pairs it.
- If still nothing: the Apple TV Remote app is built into every iPhone — open Control Center and tap the remote icon. Works just as well as the physical remote.
2 Apple TV stopped showing on my TV.
- Make sure the TV is on the right HDMI input. Press your TV remote's Source or Input button and cycle through.
- Unplug the Apple TV's power cord for 30 seconds, plug back in.
- If still black, try a different HDMI port on the TV — sometimes one fails.
3 I want my iCloud photos to show on the TV as a screensaver.
Apple TV has a beautiful built-in screensaver that pulls photos from your iCloud library:
- Settings → General → Screen Saver.
- Tap Type → Memories or Photos.
- Sign in with your Apple ID if it asks.
- Pick the albums you want.
The TV becomes a giant photo frame when nobody's watching. Family photos rotating all day. People love this.
4 How do I show something from my iPhone on the TV?
It's called AirPlay and it's one tap:
- On your iPhone, open the photo, video, or app you want to share.
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap the Screen Mirroring icon (two overlapping rectangles).
- Pick your Apple TV from the list.
Whatever's on your phone is now on the TV. Great for showing grandkids' videos to a room, or family photos at Thanksgiving.
5 How is this different from a Roku?
Roku is cheaper and gets you 95% of the same apps. Apple TV wins if:
- You have an iPhone and want effortless photo/video sharing to the TV.
- You hate ads on the home screen.
- You use Apple Fitness+ or Apple Music a lot.
For most people, Roku is the better deal. Apple TV is a premium pick.
