Yes, Hulu is moving inside the Disney+ app. No, your shows aren't disappearing, and for most households the right move is to do nothing yet. Here's what's actually done, what's only announced, what it costs as of mid-2026 — and how to spot the fake "migrate your account" emails riding the news.

The one-paragraph version, so you can relax

Disney owns Hulu outright now, and it's folding Hulu into the Disney+ app so there's one app instead of two. Hulu's shows and movies already live inside Disney+ — you can see the Hulu tab there tonight. What's winding down, eventually, is the separate Hulu app. As of July 2026 that app still works, Disney says the standalone Hulu subscription isn't going away, and there's no hard shut-off date on the calendar. Disney announced a shutdown "sometime in 2026," then told the press in May there are "no current plans" to sunset the app. Translation: the direction is certain, the schedule is soft.

So when a headline — or worse, an email — says "Hulu is shutting down, act now," you can take a breath. Real changes show up as messages inside the app when you sign in, not as urgent emails demanding your password. This page covers the essentials; the free printable PDF walks through every scenario at kitchen-table speed.

What's actually done vs. merely announced (as of July 2026)

  • Done: Hulu's catalog lives inside Disney+ — there's a Hulu tab right on the main menu.
  • Done: one login (called MyDisney) covers Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN. Hulu-only subscribers can sign in to the Disney+ app with their existing Hulu email and password, free, and watch there.
  • Done: profile linking started rolling out May 19, 2026 — your Hulu watch history and My Stuff list can carry into Disney+ (bundle households first, wider access through the year).
  • Announced, not done: retiring the standalone Hulu app. It started leaving a few devices (Nintendo Switch went first, in early 2026), but Disney now says "no current plans" for a full sunset. No firm date.
  • Announced, not done: Hulu + Live TV moving into the Disney+ app "sometime in 2026."
  • Not happening: nobody is being forced onto a pricier plan, and standalone Hulu subscriptions continue.

If you subscribe to Hulu only

Nothing changes today — same app, same bill, same shows. When you're ready, try signing in to the Disney+ app with your existing Hulu email and password (no new account, no extra charge) and find the Hulu tab. If the standalone Hulu app does eventually retire, your subscription doesn't die with it — you'd watch the same Hulu content inside Disney+ at the same standalone price. The relaxed move is to learn the new door once, on a quiet afternoon, while the old one still works.

If you have the Disney+ & Hulu bundle

  1. Link your profiles when the Disney+ app itself offers — your Hulu watch history and My Stuff list merge into Disney+'s Continue Watching and Watchlist.
  2. Pick a home app. Start doing your browsing in Disney+ so the eventual retirement of the Hulu app is a non-event.
  3. Check kids' profiles. Hulu's TV-MA content now lives in the same app as the cartoons. Junior Mode and content-rating limits handle it — if they're actually set. (My full Disney+ guide covers profiles and settings top to bottom.)

Hulu + Live TV and the Fubo deal, in plain English

There are two separate mergers in this story. The second one: in October 2025, Disney combined Hulu + Live TV with Fubo, the sports-focused live TV streamer — Disney owns about 70% of the combined company. The key fact for customers is that both brands kept operating as separate services: same channels, same app, same bill. Hulu + Live TV runs $89.99/month as of mid-2026 with Disney+ and ESPN's streaming service included. Disney has said the live TV service will also move into the Disney+ app sometime in 2026 — it hasn't happened yet. My full Hulu + Live TV guide covers channels, DVR, and alternatives.

The money side (prices checked July 2026)

  • Hulu with ads: $11.99/mo · Disney+ with ads: $11.99/mo — but the Duo Basic bundle gets you both for $12.99/mo.
  • Paying for both separately ($23.98) instead of bundling is the single most common streaming overpayment I find. That's roughly $132 a year left on the table.
  • No-ads math: Hulu ($18.99) + Disney+ Premium ($18.99) = $37.98 separately, vs. Duo Premium at $19.99/mo.
  • Billed through Apple, Amazon, Roku, or a cable company? Prices and bundle options can differ — and that's where forgotten duplicate subscriptions hide. My streaming bill audit guide has the full 15-minute checkup.
  • Prices change roughly once a year (the last round hit October 21, 2025) — confirm at disneyplus.com or hulu.com before deciding.

The migration scam emails that always follow news like this

Whenever a famous service announces account changes, fake "act now" emails ride the news. Expect messages like "Your Hulu account must be migrated by Friday — click here to keep your watch history." The tells are always the same: a deadline measured in hours, a link that wants your password or card number, and a threat of losing something. Disney's actual transition has rolled out over years, the real linking prompt appears inside the app when you're already signed in, and no legitimate migration needs your password re-typed into an email link. When in doubt: close the email, open the Disney+ or Hulu app yourself, and look for messages there. Or forward it to me — reading a suspicious email is always free.

How to check the current status yourself

  1. Open the Disney+ or Hulu app and sign in — real changes that need action from you appear there.
  2. Check the official help centers: help.disneyplus.com and help.hulu.com (search "Hulu on Disney+"). They're updated as each stage rolls out.
  3. Only then, the news — and treat any hard "shut-off date" as unverified until you see it on Disney's own pages.

Why I wrote this

Merger headlines are written to be clicked, and "Hulu is shutting down" clicks better than "apps consolidating gradually, no action needed." I wrote this guide because the gap between those two sentences is where people make panicked cancellations — and where scammers send their fake migration emails. This story is genuinely still in motion, so I flag what's firm, what's fog, and how to check the current state yourself instead of pretending the guide will stay true forever. — Bill
