Finding Out If You're Really Covered
You've invested real money in an e-bike — if it were stolen, damaged, or caused an accident, would you be covered? For many people the honest answer is 'I'm not sure.' This guide gives you the questions to ask your insurer about theft, damage, and liability, so you find out before you need to. It's general information, not insurance advice. There's a printable 29-page version up top.
Common Questions
1 Is my e-bike covered by my homeowners insurance?
It may be, as personal property for theft and damage with some liability coverage — but limits, exclusions, and how the motor is treated vary a lot. The only way to know is to ask your insurer about your specific policy.
2 Will theft away from home be covered?
Sometimes yes, sometimes only from home, and often up to a single-item cap that may be below your bike's value. Ask about both situations, the cap, and whether a lock is required.
3 What if I injure someone while riding?
That's liability, and it's crucial. A home policy's personal liability sometimes covers bicycle incidents, but the motor can put an e-bike in a gray area or an exclusion — confirm it directly.
4 Does the motor change how I'm covered?
It can. Some insurers treat an e-bike more like a motor vehicle than a bicycle, which may change or exclude coverage. Know your class and wattage (from the label) when you call, and tell them honestly what you have.
5 Do I need a separate e-bike policy?
Maybe — if your bike is valuable, you ride widely, or your home policy leaves big gaps. For a modest bike that mostly stays locked at home, your existing policy may be enough. Weigh the gaps against the cost, and ask whether you can 'schedule' the bike instead.
6 What do I need to make a claim?
Proof of ownership — the receipt, photos, and serial number — plus a police report for theft. Keep those records on file; our locks-and-trackers guide covers setting them up.
