Making Friends with Your Display and App

The little screen on your handlebars — and the phone app — can feel like a puzzle. But a few basics make them genuinely useful: showing your battery, setting how much help you get, and sometimes locking the bike. This guide demystifies both, and reassures you that the app is optional for most riders. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 Do I have to use the phone app?

No. For most riders the app is optional. The handlebar display shows your battery, assist, and speed — everything you need to ride. Add the app only if you want extras like maps, settings, or a digital lock.

2 Which assist level should I use?

Match it to the moment: a low level (Eco) on the flats to stretch your range, a higher level on hills or into the wind for an easy time. Higher assist uses more battery, so watch the gauge.

3 Can I trust the range estimate?

Treat it as a living estimate, not a promise — it changes with assist level, hills, and wind. Watch the battery gauge too and turn back with charge to spare.

4 How do I pair the app?

Install your bike brand's official app, turn on the bike and your phone's Bluetooth, then use 'pair' or 'connect' in the app and follow the prompts. Save any account login where you keep your passwords. It's fiddly once, then easy.

5 Is the app's digital lock enough to stop theft?

No. A digital lock or alarm is a helpful deterrent, but it won't stop someone carrying the bike off. Always use a sturdy physical lock too — see our locks-and-trackers guide.

6 What do I do if a display error code appears?

Write down the exact code, then turn the system off and on, check the battery is seated and charged, and look up the code in your manual. If it persists, take it to a shop.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
