Digital ID at the Airport, at a Glance

You can now show ID from your phone at a growing number of TSA checkpoints — a mobile driver's license in Apple or Google Wallet, or a newer phone passport for domestic checks. But not every airport supports it, and TSA can still ask for a physical ID. This guide covers where it works, the REAL ID star, and exactly what to carry. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 Can I leave my license at home if it's on my phone?

No. A physical ID is always required as backup, and not every checkpoint accepts phones. Carry a REAL ID license or a passport on every flight.

2 Will my phone ID work at my airport?

Only where the right reader is installed and your state participates. Check TSA's official digital ID page for your specific airport before you rely on it — coverage keeps changing.

3 Does the phone passport work internationally?

No. The Wallet passport is for domestic TSA checks only and is still new. International travel requires your physical passport book.

4 What is the REAL ID star?

To fly within the U.S., your license needs a star marking it REAL ID-compliant, or you use a passport. Check your card now and upgrade at the BMV if it has no star and you have no passport.

5 Do I have to use the facial camera?

Generally no. You can decline and present a physical ID the standard way. The digital option is a convenience, not a requirement.

6 Is a text asking me to 'verify my ID before my flight' real?

No — that's a scam. TSA and airlines don't text you links to verify your ID. Don't click; go to tsa.gov or your airline's app directly.

Would You Rather I Just Help?

Travel is stressful enough without an ID surprise at security. I'll make sure your license is REAL ID-ready or your passport is current, set up a digital ID if you want one, and show you what to pack so the checkpoint is the easy part. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
