Ohio Mobile ID: Your Driver's License on Your Phone
Last verified: October 2026
A calm, plain-English walkthrough of the Ohio Mobile ID — adding it to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, using it without handing over your phone, and why the plastic card still rides along. Questions? (330) 200-8042.
Ohio Mobile ID, at a Glance
Ohio lets you add your driver's license or state ID to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, so you can show it with a tap. It's free and optional — and it does not replace the plastic card, which you still carry. This guide covers who qualifies, how to add it on an iPhone or Android phone, how to use it safely, and where it's accepted. There's a printable 29-page version up top.
Common Questions
1 Do I still need my regular license?
Yes — always. Ohio treats the Mobile ID as a companion to your physical card, not a replacement. Keep the plastic card on you, for the many places and moments a phone ID isn't accepted.
2 How do I add it?
From your phone's built-in wallet app: open Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, choose to add a driver's license or state ID, pick Ohio, scan your physical card front and back, and complete a quick face scan so the BMV can verify it's you. It's free.
3 Which phones work?
Recent iPhones through Apple Wallet (since 2024), and Android phones through Google Wallet (added in late August 2026). Samsung Wallet isn't on Ohio's list yet. Because support changes, check the Ohio BMV's Mobile ID page for the current list.
4 Is it safe if someone grabs my phone?
It's protected behind your lock screen and you can erase a lost phone remotely with Find My. Set a passcode or Face ID first. You're never asked to unlock and hand over your phone for a real ID check — that's a scam sign.
5 Can I use it to vote or fly?
Not for voting — it isn't an accepted Ohio voter ID. For flying within the U.S., it may work at some TSA checkpoints, but bring a physical ID too; international travel needs your passport.
6 Will someone text me a link to set it up?
No. You add it yourself, from your own wallet app, whenever you like. Any text or email with a link to 'activate' your Ohio ID is a scam — don't click it.
Would You Rather I Just Help?
Adding an ID to your phone is exactly the kind of thing I love to help with — calm, unhurried, and done right the first time. I'll set it up with you, make sure your phone is locked down safely, and show you how to use it without ever handing your phone to a stranger. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.
Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
