Phone Car & Hotel Keys, at a Glance

Some newer cars and hotels let you unlock with your phone or watch instead of a fob or plastic card. A phone key lives in your wallet app (or a hotel's app), unlocks by tap or as you approach, can be shared and revoked, and — on an iPhone — can work for a few hours even after the battery dies. But a phone can fail, so always keep the physical key. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 What happens if my phone's battery dies?

On an iPhone, power reserve can keep your car key working a few hours after the battery dies on its own — but NOT if you deliberately powered off, and only briefly. That's why you keep the physical fob.

2 Is a phone key safe if my phone is lost?

Yes — arguably safer than a fob. The key sits behind your lock screen, and you can disable it remotely with Find My. A lost fob works for whoever finds it.

3 Can I let family use my car with a phone key?

Yes — share a key to their phone (sometimes with limits) and revoke it anytime. A revoked key stops working even if their phone is offline.

4 Does my car or hotel support this?

It depends — support is growing but not universal and varies by model and property. Check your carmaker's app or the hotel chain's app; don't assume.

5 Do I still need the real key?

Yes, always. A phone can die, be lost, or hit a glitchy reader. Keep the physical fob or room card, and the phone key is pure convenience with no downside.

6 Is a text telling me to 'add my car key' safe?

No — that's a scam. Set up keys only through the carmaker's or hotel's official app, never a link in a text or email.

Would You Rather I Just Help?

Phone keys feel futuristic and they're handy — but they come with a couple of 'what ifs' worth understanding. I'll help you set up a car or hotel key through the official app, lock your phone to protect it, practice using it, and lock in the one habit that matters: always keeping the real key as backup. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
