About Your AT&T Smart Wi
The AT&T Smart Wi-Fi Gateway is a vertical white tower that combines the fiber ONT (optical network terminal) and the Wi-Fi router in one box for AT&T Internet customers. The most common model is the BGW320; older homes may have the BGW210. The orange fiber cable plugs into the back. Setup is mostly automatic — AT&T provisions it remotely. Most issues are about extending Wi-Fi to back rooms, or seniors who can't find the Wi-Fi password (it's printed on the side).
When to skip the DIY and just call: Gateway physically damaged or burnt smell. · Wi-Fi unreliable in more than one room for over a week. · Customer wants to compare AT&T plans / negotiate or switch to fiber tier..
Common Questions
1 Solid red LED — no internet
- Check the fiber cable — is it kinked or pulled out?
- Check the orange fiber jack on the wall — fully seated?
- Power-cycle: unplug gateway 60 sec, plug back in, wait 8 minutes.
- Still red? Call AT&T support (800) 288-2020. They'll often "push a new config" remotely that fixes it.
2 Wi-Fi very weak in back of house
- AT&T gateways have decent but not great range. Move it up high if possible.
- AT&T sells Air 4920 extenders ($50-100) that pair automatically.
- Better: put gateway in IP Passthrough mode (Smart Home Manager → Network → Advanced) and run customer-owned Eero/Deco mesh behind it.
3 Speed slower than plan
- Plug a laptop directly via Ethernet. Run fast.com.
- Match the plan within 80%? Wi-Fi is the bottleneck — customer needs to be closer or use Ethernet.
- Wired speed also slow? Call AT&T. They'll run an OLT check on the fiber.
4 Customer wants their own router behind the AT&T gateway
- Smart Home Manager app → Network → Advanced → IP Passthrough.
- Set Allocation Mode to "Passthrough," DHCP Lease to "Public."
- Save. Power-cycle. Now plug customer router's WAN into AT&T gateway's Ethernet port 1.
- AT&T Wi-Fi should be turned OFF in Smart Home Manager to avoid double Wi-Fi networks.
5 Wi-Fi password forgotten
- Look on the side of the gateway — sticker with SSID and password.
- Or open Smart Home Manager → Network → Wi-Fi settings.
- Tap the eye icon to reveal.
