Solar Connectors, at a Glance

The plugs on portable solar gear look unfamiliar, but there are only a handful and they follow a pattern. Most panels use round, twist-lock MC4 connectors; power stations may use Anderson, XT60, a round DC barrel (8mm) plug, or the maker's own connector. When the two do not match, a small adapter bridges them — and a matched kit has already done it for you. The trick is to line up three things: the plug shape, the station's voltage window, and the polarity (plus to plus, minus to minus). There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 Why don't my panel and station use the same plug?

They often do not, and that is normal. Panels lean on MC4 while stations use all sorts of inputs, so makers include — or sell — an adapter that joins the two. Check whether one came in the box; if not, ask the maker which adapter fits.

2 What are the common solar connectors?

MC4 is the round twist-lock plug on most panels. You may also meet Anderson-style plugs, the compact XT60, a round DC barrel (8mm) plug, and USB / USB-C ports built into the panel. Some stations add a proprietary plug of their own.

3 What is polarity, and why does it matter?

Polarity is simply which side is plus and which is minus — like a flashlight battery. Positive must meet positive and negative meet negative, or the station will not charge and may object. Most clicking plugs only fit one way; plain round plugs are where you watch it closely.

4 Do I need an adapter?

Only if the panel's plug and the station's solar input are different shapes — which is common. An adapter changes the shape without changing the power. Let the maker choose it, or buy a panel and station as a matched set so the right cable is already included.

5 Can I plug a panel straight into a wall outlet?

No — never. A portable panel charges a power station or battery, never your home's outlets or breaker panel. Always run the panel into the station's marked solar or DC input, not the wall-charging port, which can sit right beside it.

6 Why won't my panel charge?

Usually a connector issue: the plug is not fully seated, it is in the wall-charging port instead of the solar input, the input is switched off, or the polarity is reversed. Check the plug, the port, the switch, and the cable before anything else.
