Sizing a portable solar panel is really just matching. Start with the power station, sized to your must-run list, then choose a panel with two matches in mind. First, the panel's voltage has to fit inside the station's input window — enough to start charging, never above the maximum. Second, the panel's watts should come up toward the most the station accepts from solar, for the fastest charge it allows. Too small charges slowly; too big is simply unused, not dangerous. 1 Which comes first, the panel or the station?

The station, every time. Size the battery to what you want to keep running, then pick a panel that matches it. Buying the panel first is the most common sizing mistake.

2 What are the two matches?

First, voltage: the panel's voltage must fit inside the station's input window — above the minimum, never above the maximum. Second, wattage: the panel's watts should reach up toward the most the station accepts from solar. Voltage keeps it safe; watts set the speed.

3 Is a bigger panel dangerous for my station?

No. A panel bigger than the station's solar limit is simply not fully used — the station takes what it can and ignores the rest, as long as the voltage stays inside its window. It just won't charge any faster than the station allows.

4 What happens if the panel is too small?

It still works — it just charges slowly, and on a short or cloudy day it may only partly refill the battery. You can often add a second matched panel later if you need more.

5 Should I size the panel exactly to my needs?

Lean a touch generous. Real output runs below the rating because of clouds, haze, angle, and heat, so a panel sized just barely enough on a perfect day falls short on an ordinary one. A little extra is a cushion, not waste.

6 Is a matched kit a good idea?
