Common Questions

1 Can I use a regular household extension cord?

No. Household cords have the wrong connectors and aren't built for a solar panel's power or for living outdoors. Use a cable that plainly says it's solar-rated, with connectors that match your panel and station.

2 Why does a long, thin cable lose power?

Power fades as it travels down a wire, and a long, skinny one loses more along the way — that's voltage drop. Picture a weak dribble at the end of a long, narrow hose. A shorter run or a thicker cable fixes it.

3 How thick a cable do I need?

It depends on the distance. Longer runs want a thicker, lower-gauge cable to hold onto your power (with gauge, a smaller number means a thicker wire). When you're between two sizes for a real reach, size up — you'll never regret the heftier one.

4 Can I run the cable under a rug or through a doorway?

No. Both pinch the wire over time, and a rug can let a cable warm up out of sight. Route cable out in the open, along an edge, and clear of where anyone walks — no trip hazards and no crushed wires.

5 What if the plugs don't match?

Use the correct adapter — never force two connectors together. Many panels use round MC4 plugs while stations vary, so a matched adapter bridges them while keeping the type and polarity right. Our connectors guide shows each type.

6 Does wiring in series really help over a long run?
