A Solar Panel's Numbers, Made Simple

A solar panel's label is a short stack of numbers — watts, volts, and amps — plus the letters STC. Watts tell you the panel's size and how fast it charges. Volts and amps describe how it delivers, and multiplied together they roughly equal the watts. The one number that must match is voltage: it has to fit inside your power station's input window, above the minimum and never above the maximum. And because every rating is measured in perfect lab sun, real output is always lower. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

1 Which numbers actually matter?

Just two. Watts tell you the panel's size and how fast it charges. Voltage is the number that has to fit your power station's window. Everything else — amps, efficiency, model names — is background you can skip.

2 Why does the panel show two voltages?

One is the resting voltage, measured with nothing connected — that's the higher number. The other is the working voltage, what it delivers once it's charging. Both are normal. You check the higher, resting figure against your station's maximum.

3 What does STC mean on the label?

STC stands for standard test conditions — perfect lab sunshine on a cool panel. It's a fair way to compare panels, but it isn't your backyard, so real output is always lower, sometimes much lower on cloudy or winter days.

4 Is watts equals volts times amps something I have to calculate?

No. Just know that watts are roughly volts times amps. It explains why two panels can share a watt number with different volt and amp figures — they reach the same size by different mixes. No math required on your end.

5 Can the wrong numbers damage my power station?

Too many watts, no — the station simply ignores the extra. Too much voltage, yes — that can harm it. So keep the panel's highest voltage under the station's maximum, and relax about watts.

6 Do the label numbers tell me if the plug will fit?
