Using Old USB Gear with a New Device, at a Glance

A new laptop or phone with only the small USB-C port doesn't mean your old gear is finished. A little USB-C-to-USB-A adapter lets flash drives, card readers, mice, keyboards, and printers plug right in, and a small hub adds several ports at once — often an SD-card slot and a TV connection too. Phones can use an adapter as well, though hungry gear may need a powered hub. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 My new laptop has no slot for my flash drive — is it useless?

Not at all. The laptop uses the newer USB-C port, and your drive has the older USB-A plug. A small USB-C-to-USB-A adapter lets the drive plug right in, and all your files are still there waiting.

2 Will my old mouse, keyboard, and printer work with an adapter?

Yes, almost always. A wired mouse or keyboard works the instant you plug it into the adapter, and the wireless kind with a little plug-in receiver works too. Printers connect fine for occasional use, though a hungry one may need a powered hub.

3 What's the difference between an adapter, a dongle, and a hub?

An adapter (a dongle is just one on a short cable) gives you one socket for one accessory. A hub plugs into one port and gives you several at once, often with an SD-card slot and an HDMI TV connection.

4 Can I plug a flash drive into my USB-C phone?

Usually, yes. Use a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter and the phone's Files app can see the drive and copy photos across. Stick to low-power gear on a phone; for anything bigger, use a powered hub with its own wall plug.

5 How do I pick a good adapter?

Buy from a reputable maker with a clear, plain description of what it does. Skip the cheapest no-name part — it can run warm, wobble loose, or quit early. A sturdy mid-priced part from a seller you trust is the comfortable choice.

Would You Rather I Just Help?

Bringing old gear back to life is one of my favorite quick jobs — it saves you buying things twice. Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
