Old and New iPhones Under One Roof, at a Glance

A mix of iPhones with different plugs is normal, and easy to manage once it's named. iPhone 15 and later use USB-C — the small oval plug — and iPhone 14 and earlier use Lightning — the slim plug with a gold strip. This guide walks you through which cables and chargers to keep, which car adapters still fit, and the one or two little adapters that are actually worth buying. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 Which iPhones use USB-C and which use Lightning?

iPhone 15 and everything newer use USB-C — the small oval plug that goes in either way up. iPhone 14 and everything older use Lightning — the slim plug with a gold strip you can see. Just look at the hole on the bottom of the phone, or check the model name in settings.

2 Can I use one cable for both my old and new iPhone?

Not directly — the plugs are different shapes, so a USB-C cable won't fit a Lightning iPhone. But a single USB-C cable with a small Lightning-to-USB-C adapter on the end can charge both. For everyday use, it's often simpler to keep each phone's own cable with it.

3 Should I throw out my old USB-A charger blocks?

No — keep at least one. With a cable that has a USB-A charger end, an older block charges either kind of iPhone just fine. It may charge a newer phone a little slower, which is perfectly safe for overnight.

4 What adapters are actually worth buying?

Very few. If you own both phone eras, one Lightning-to-USB-C adapter is the most useful. A USB-C-to-USB-A adapter helps old and new cables and blocks work together. That's usually all a household needs — resist buying a bagful.

5 Will my car charge both phones?

It depends on the car's port. Older cars often have a flat USB-A port; newer ones may have USB-C. Match your cable to the car's port and the phone you're charging. Snap a photo of the port and the bottom of each phone and you'll know exactly what to use.

Would You Rather I Just Help?

Sorting a home with old and new iPhones is one of my favorite quick jobs — it ends a real daily annoyance in one calm sitting. Gather the phones and the basket of cords and I'll match each cable to a phone, label the keepers, note the one adapter you need, and recycle the rest. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free, nothing to sell you.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
