Matching Your Audio Cables, at a Glance

The back of a TV or stereo stops being a mystery once you can name the common sound connectors on sight. This guide walks you through the 3.5mm headphone jack, red-and-white RCA, optical (Toslink), and HDMI with ARC — what each looks like, where it goes, and how to match the right cable to the jacks your gear actually has. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 How do I get my TV's sound through a soundbar?

Look for an HDMI port marked ARC or eARC on both the TV and the soundbar — one HDMI cable between those ports is usually the best and tidiest. No ARC? Use optical if both have it, or a headphone or RCA connection. Then set the TV's sound menu to that output.

2 What are the red and white plugs for?

That's RCA, an analog audio pair: red is the right channel and white is the left. You'll find them on stereos and older players. A yellow plug in the bunch is old-style video, not sound, so leave it unplugged for an audio-only hookup.

3 What's the cable with the little square plug that glows?

That's an optical cable, also called Toslink. It carries sound as light, which is why the tip can glow faintly red. Its square plug fits a port labeled OPTICAL or DIGITAL AUDIO on TVs, soundbars, and players.

4 Can I connect an optical output to my old stereo's RCA jacks?

Not with a plain cable. Optical is digital and RCA is analog, so they speak different languages. You need a small powered converter box that translates digital-to-analog — check it converts in that direction before you buy.

5 I plugged it all in but there's still no sound — why?

Usually it's mute or low volume, a plug not pushed fully home, or the device still set to its own speakers. Check those, make sure an OUT feeds an IN, and set the TV's sound menu to the output you wired up.

Would You Rather I Just Help?

Getting your sound hooked up is one of my favorite quick jobs — it brings a whole room back to life in one calm sitting. Send me a photo of the back of each device, or have me out, and I'll name every jack, match it to the right cable, and get the sound flowing. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free, nothing to sell you.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
