Wireless Charging, at a Glance

Setting your phone on a pad or stand to charge — no cable into the phone — is wonderfully easy, once you know whether your phone can do it and what the labels mean. This guide explains Qi, Qi2, Qi2 25W, and MagSafe in plain English, shows which phones charge wirelessly, and explains why a thick case, a card behind the phone, or poor alignment can get in the way. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 How do I know if my phone charges wirelessly?

Check your phone maker's spec page for your exact model — it will say whether the phone charges wirelessly and whether it's Qi or Qi2. iPhone 15 and later support Qi2; many newer Android phones charge wirelessly too, though not all have magnets built in.

2 What's the difference between Qi and Qi2?

Qi is the long-standing standard, where you line the phone up yourself. Qi2 added a ring of magnets, based on Apple's MagSafe, so the phone snaps into place on its own. Base Qi2 charges up to 15 watts.

3 What does Qi2 25W mean?

It's the newer, faster tier, finalized in 2025 — up to 25 watts instead of 15. To reach that speed, both the pad and your phone have to support it; otherwise charging happens at the slower speed your phone allows.

4 Can I leave my case on while charging?

Often yes, if it's thin and has no metal. But a thick case, a metal-containing case, or a wallet with cards behind the phone can slow or block charging. If it won't charge, test with the case off and the phone centered.

5 Is wireless charging slower than a cable?

Generally yes, and it runs a bit warmer, because power crosses a small gap instead of a direct cable. It's great for overnight or topping up through the day; reach for your cable when you need a fast fill before heading out.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
