Taking Cards Offline, at a Glance

Offline mode lets you keep ringing sales when the internet drops — but it queues card payments rather than approving them, and if a queued card declines, expires, or is disputed when you reconnect, you eat the loss. That's true on Square, Clover, and Toast alike. Set a low cap, reconnect fast, avoid big sales from strangers, and keep a cellular backup as the safer first move. There's a printable version up top.

Common Questions

1 If I take a card offline, will I definitely get paid?

No. The payment is queued, not approved. When you reconnect it can decline, expire, or be disputed — and if it does, the loss is yours, with no customer there to charge again.

2 How long do I have to reconnect?

It varies. Square's window is 72 hours as of late 2026; Clover and Toast hold for their own limited periods. Confirm the current figure for your system, and reconnect as fast as you can or good payments expire.

3 Who bears the loss if an offline payment fails?

You do — on Square, Clover, and Toast alike. No system insures the merchant against a queued payment that declines, expires, or is disputed. Plan around it with a low cap.

4 Isn't a cellular backup better than offline mode?

Usually. A phone hotspot or a terminal with its own cell keeps you genuinely online, so cards are approved for real and none of the offline risk applies. Reach for the backup first.

5 What offline cap should I set?

Low enough to cover your ordinary sale but block the big one you'd most regret losing. There's no magic number — match it to how you sell and err on the low side.

6 Which offline sales are the riskiest?

A large sale from a stranger. A card that would be declined live can sail through offline because nothing checks it. For big charges in an outage, take cash or wait until you're back online.

Would You Rather I Just Help?

Offline mode is one of the few payment tools that can quietly cost you money, so it's worth setting up with care. I'll help you weigh it against a cellular backup, set a safe low cap, and get your staff clear on the rules — so an outage is a nuisance, not a loss. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free, nothing to sell you.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
