Giving an E-Scooter Wisely

An electric scooter can be a wonderful gift — freedom, fun, and a grin a mile wide — and also a fast machine that deserves respect. This guide helps you give one wisely: the right size for the child, the safety gear that matters, a certified battery, and sensible ground rules. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 What age is right for an e-scooter?

Follow the model's recommended minimum age and weight range — they reflect its speed and the judgment needed to ride it safely. Match the scooter to the actual child, and favor a gentle, slower model for a younger rider.

2 How fast should it go?

Slower is safer. A model built for young children tops out gently; if it has speed modes, lock it to the slowest and let the child earn more with demonstrated care.

3 What safety gear is needed?

A properly fitted helmet, always, plus wrist guards, knee and elbow pads, and closed-toe shoes. Give the gear with the scooter and make 'no helmet, no ride' a firm rule from day one.

4 How do I know it's safe to charge?

Buy one with a recognized safety certification (the standard for stand-up scooters is UL 2272), have an adult do the charging with the proper charger on a hard surface, never overnight, and keep it out of the child's reach.

5 Where can kids ride them?

That's set by your local rules, which differ from e-bikes and vary by town. Many families keep young riders on a driveway, yard, or car-free area until they're older and more skilled. Check your town's rules.

6 Should I check with the parents first?

Yes — a powered scooter affects their rules, their home's charging, and their comfort with where the child rides. A friendly heads-up before you buy keeps the gift happy for everyone.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
