Getting Your Scooter Where You Need to Go

A mobility scooter is wonderful — but only if you can get it into the car to reach the places that matter. The good news is there are several good ways: folding and take-apart travel scooters, trunk hoists, and ramped hitch carriers. This guide helps you find the one that fits your scooter, your car, and your strength. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 How do I get it in the car if I can't lift much?

Use equipment that does the lifting: a powered trunk hoist lifts the whole scooter in for you, or a ramped hitch carrier lets you roll it onto a platform with no lift at all. Never try to muscle a heavy scooter by hand.

2 What's a travel scooter?

A scooter built to go in a car — it either folds into a compact shape or takes apart into several liftable pieces. The trade-off is a smaller, lighter machine with somewhat less range and ruggedness than a full-size one.

3 Inside the car or on a carrier?

Inside protects it from weather and theft but uses trunk space and may need a hoist or travel model. A hitch carrier keeps the trunk free and lets you roll it on, but the scooter rides exposed — so cover and lock it.

4 Do I need to worry about my car's hitch rating?

Yes, for a hitch carrier — the scooter plus the carrier must stay within your car's hitch and weight ratings, and scooters are heavy, so check carefully. Have a pro fit the hitch and carrier, rated for the load.

5 Should I take the battery off to load it?

Yes — it lightens every lift and keeps the pricey battery cool and secure rather than baking on an outside carrier or being stolen off it. Carry it inside the car, cool and secure.

6 Can I try a method before buying?

You should. Fold or take apart a travel scooter and lift the pieces into your own car, or have a supplier show you a hoist or carrier and try it yourself. Prove it's manageable for you in real conditions before you commit.
