2 Why does shade matter so much to the choice?

In a plain string, panels share a path, so a shaded panel can drag down the others — like an old strand of Christmas lights. Microinverters and optimizers manage each panel separately, so shade on one doesn't hurt the rest.

3 What's the difference between microinverters and optimizers?

Both put electronics under each panel. Microinverters convert to AC right at the panel; optimizers condition each panel's DC and send it to one central inverter to convert. Both give shade tolerance and panel-level monitoring.

4 Are string inverters outdated?

No — they're proven, economical, and an excellent fit for open, sunny roofs with little shade. Many happy solar homes use them. They're simply weaker on shaded or complicated roofs.

5 Which costs the most?

A string inverter is usually the most economical up front, since there's one main box. Micro and optimizers add a device per panel, so they cost more — but on a shaded roof that can pay off in power you'd otherwise lose. (We never quote exact prices.)

6 Can any of them work with a battery for backup?
