The middle path: a smart box under each panel for shade tolerance and monitoring, plus one central inverter to convert the power. Here's how it works. Questions? My number is (330) 200-8042.

Power Optimizers, at a Glance

Power optimizers put a small box under each panel that conditions and manages that panel's DC power — then sends it to one central inverter that does the actual converting. You get much of the shade tolerance and panel-level monitoring of microinverters, while keeping a reachable central inverter and meeting rooftop rapid-shutdown safety rules. Like all grid-tied systems, it needs a battery for outage backup. This guide explains it all plainly. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 What does a power optimizer do?

It's a small box under each panel that conditions and manages that panel's DC power to get the most from it, then sends it to a central inverter to convert. The result is shade tolerance and panel-level monitoring.

2 How are optimizers different from microinverters?

Both put electronics under each panel. Optimizers keep one central inverter to convert the power; microinverters convert right at each panel, with no central box. Optimizers keep the main electronics at ground level.

3 Do power optimizers help with shade?

Yes. Because each panel is managed on its own, a shaded panel doesn't drag down the others — much like microinverters, and far better than a plain string inverter.

4 Do optimizers work during a power outage?

No — the central inverter shuts off in an outage for safety, like any grid-tied system. You need a battery and a hybrid inverter to keep chosen circuits running.

5 What is 'module-level power electronics' (MLPE)?

It's the industry term for electronics at each panel — both optimizers and microinverters. They handle shade gracefully and help meet rooftop rapid-shutdown safety rules.

6 Are optimizers a good choice?

For a roof with some shade where you like a reachable central inverter and panel-level views, yes — they're a sensible middle ground. A wide-open roof may suit a string; a heavily shaded one, microinverters.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
