The classic central inverter: one box, converting all your panels' power. Here's how it works, where it shines, and its one real limitation. Questions? My number is (330) 200-8042.

The Central String Inverter, at a Glance

A string inverter is the classic approach: your panels are wired in a series (a 'string') that feeds one central box, usually mounted at ground level, which converts all their power at once. It's simple, proven, and often the most economical choice — ideal for an open, sunny roof. Its one real weakness is shade, which can drag down a string, though power optimizers can largely fix that. This guide explains it all plainly. There's a printable 29-page version up top.

Common Questions

1 How does a string inverter work?

Your panels are wired in a series — a 'string' — and all their DC power flows to one central inverter, usually mounted at ground level, which converts it to household AC. One box does the job for the whole system.

2 What is the downside of a string inverter?

Shade. Because the panels share a path, a shaded panel can drag down the others on its string — like an old strand of Christmas lights. On an open, sunny roof this never comes up; on a shaded roof, optimizers help.

3 Can I add power optimizers to a string inverter?

Yes, and it's common. Optimizers under each panel let every panel work independently, giving you shade tolerance and panel-level monitoring while keeping one central inverter. See our power-optimizer guide.

4 What happens if a string inverter fails?

The whole system pauses until it's serviced — but there's just one unit, at ground level, so repair is usually quick. The inverter is also the part most likely to need replacing over the system's life.

5 Does a string inverter work during a power outage?

No — like any plain grid-tied inverter, it shuts off in an outage for safety (anti-islanding). Only a hybrid string inverter paired with a battery keeps chosen circuits running. See our hybrid-inverter guide.

6 Is a string inverter still a good choice?

Yes — on the right roof. For a big, open, sunny roof with little shade, it's often the best value: proven, simple, and economical. It simply struggles where there's heavy shade.

Would you rather I just do this for you?

No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.

Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
