Receipt Printers, Cash Drawers and Scanners — Getting Them Connected
Last verified: October 2026
A plain-English guide to wiring up your counter gear — receipt printer, cash drawer, and barcode scanner — and fixing the faults that trip everyone up. Rather have a hand at the counter? My number is (330) 200-8042.
Connecting Your Counter Gear, at a Glance
Receipt printers, cash drawers, and barcode scanners look fiddly, but they follow a few simple rules. Your gear connects by USB, Bluetooth, or LAN; the cash drawer usually plugs into the printer and pops when a receipt prints; thermal paper has a right side up; and a scanner is just a fast keyboard. Check your POS's supported-hardware list before you buy, and most problems never happen. There's a printable version up top.
Common Questions
1 Why is my receipt printing blank?
Almost always the thermal roll is loaded upside down. Thermal paper prints on one side only — flip the roll so the printable side faces the print head and it'll print.
2 What does the cash drawer plug into?
Usually the receipt printer, not the computer — with an RJ cable into the port marked DK or 'drawer'. The drawer pops when the printer prints. If it won't open, check that cable and the printer first.
3 Do barcode scanners need special software?
Most don't. A scanner acts like a fast keyboard and just types the numbers it reads. The real setup is adding your items with their barcodes so a scan rings up the right product. Check your POS's supported list to be sure.
4 Why does my Bluetooth gear keep disconnecting?
Usually a low battery, then distance or interference. Charge it, keep it close to the tablet, and if it still drops, 'forget' and re-pair it. On a fixed counter, switching to USB ends the trouble.
5 How do I know a printer will work with my POS?
Check your system's supported-hardware list before you buy. Square, Clover, Toast, and Shopify each publish one. An unsupported printer may never work right, so this one step saves the most grief.
6 Do I even need a receipt printer?
Not always. Every major system can text or email a receipt instead. Market vendors and home-service folks often skip the printer entirely; a busy counter is usually faster with one. Offer customers the choice.
Would You Rather I Just Help?
Wiring up a printer, drawer, and scanner is quick work when you can see the counter — and frustrating when you're guessing over the phone. I'll come set it all up, test every piece, and show you how to swap a roll and clear the common faults yourself. $99 flat for a visit, 30-day come-back-free, nothing to sell you.
Would you rather I just do this for you?
No shame in it — plenty of folks would rather hand it off, and that's what I'm here for. I'll come to your home, set it up right, and make sure it's working before I leave. Flat $99 per visit — no jargon, no upsell, and every visit is 30-day come-back-free.
Not a hardware job? I can often fix it remotely for $49 — a secure screen-share, up to 2 hours, that you watch the whole time and can end whenever (included free for $39/mo Support Plan members, and it counts toward the $99 if it turns out I need to come out).
